As Christmas is coming, there are presents to be bought, cards to be sent, rooms to be cleaned. Parents are  with difficult jobs of hiding presents from curious young children. If the gifts are large, this is sometimes a real . On Christmas Eve, young children find the  almost unbearable（难以忍受的）. They are  between the wish to go to bed early so that Father Christmas will bring their presents quickly and the wish to  up late so that they will not  the fun. The wish for gifts usually proves stronger. But though children go to bed early, they often lie  for a long time, hoping to get a short look at Father Christmas.

　　Last Christmas, my wife and I  managed to hide a few large presents in the storeroom. I feared the moment when my son, Jimmy, would  me where that new bike had come from, but  he did not see it.

　　On Christmas Eve, it took the children hours to go to sleep. It must have been nearly  when my wife and I went quietly into their room and began  stockings. Then I pushed in the  I bought for Jimmy and left it beside the Christmas tree. We knew we would not get  sleep that night, for the children were  to get up early. At about five o'clock the next morning, we were woken by loud sounds coming from the children's room － they were shouting excitedly!  I had time to get out of bed, young Jimmy came  into the room on his new bike, and his sister, Mary,  close behind pushing her new baby carriage. Even the baby arrived, he moved  the hands and knees into the room dragging a large balloon behind him. Suddenly it burst. That woke  up completely. The day had really begun with a bang（巨响）.

Ｍy second father

My father died when I was five. It was hard on us all. My brother, who is eight years older than me, began to __36____my mother and me. He made sure the trash was taken out and the yard mowed. He did this _37____ without being told to do so.

It was just getting dark; there was a touch of fog and I was on a lonely stretch of road. But I was going along cheerfully, thinking about the dinner I would eat when I    1   to Salisbury.

I was going along   2   at about thirty-five miles an hour when suddenly I heard a scream, a woman’s scream—“  3  !”I looked round, but the only   4  of life was a large, black, rather suspicious-looking car just   5  a bend in the road about a hundred yards   6  .That was   7  the cry had come from. I   8   speed and went after it. I think the driver saw what I was doing,  9   he did the same and began to draw away from me. As I drew near, the girl’s voice came again, a lovely voice but   10   with fear.

I felt my blood   12  . The fog was coming down thicker now; the countryside was lonelier. The man in the car had no   13   noticed this. Again came a cry.

“Drop the knife, fool. Oh!”Then a cry and a groan.

If I was to save her, it was now or   14  . Perhaps even now I was too late. But if I couldn’t save the girl, I would   15   try to bring the murderer to the police station. The car was only a couple of yards away now. I drove the bike right across its   16  , and its brakes screamed as the driver tried to pull it over and crashed into the ditch on the side of the road. The door of the car was pushed open angrily and a dark, evil-looking fellow stepped out, mad with anger.

“Fool!”he shouted   17   he came towards me with his fist raised to hit me. But I was quicker than he. I put all I knew into   18   that would have knocked out Joe Louis. It caught him right on the ground without a   19  .I rushed to the car,  20   open the door and peered inside. There was no girl there. Suddenly from the back of the car came a voice.

“You have been listening to a radio play. Murder in Hollywood, with Mae Garbo and Clark Taylor. The news will follow immediately.”

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers.   1   the car full of flowers we were going home. On our way back my wife    2   a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow. “   3   it,” my wife said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof rack（行李架）. I’ve always    4   one like that.”

Then he   17   our car; first the flowers, then the cupboard. “Well, well,” he said, laughing. “It’s a cupboard you’ve got there! We thought it was   18   else.”
