Because the house she sold to the lawyer isn't worth the money he has already paid. 答案 BDAC [09年11月更新] Passage 15 (贵州省高武中学2010届高三10月月考) E “A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right, says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is always and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is. In Mollie's opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing. “If you aren't telling a story, you're a very dead writer indeed, she says. With the chief function of a writer being to entertain, Mollie is indeed an entertainer. “I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language, she says. “This love goes back to early childhood. I've told stories all my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said `Nonsense, Mollie, dear, you’ll be a writer.’ So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer. This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical and gives a picture both of Mollie's ambition and her struggle towards its achievement. Thoughts of her childhood inevitablybrought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fields-sadly now covered with modern houses.“I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood. I'll never go back, she said. “Never. “When I set one of my books in Scotland, she said, “I can recall my romanticfeelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that's important, because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us. 查看更多

What is Math Anxiety?

Math anxiety or fear of math is actually quite common. Math anxiety is quite   36 to stage-fright. Why does someone suffer   37 ? Fear of something going wrong in front of a crowd? Fear of   38 the lines? Fear of being judged   39 ? Fear of going completely blank? Math anxiety conjures(使现出) up fear of some type. The fear that one won't be able to do the   40 or the fear that it's too hard or the fear of failure which often stems(起因于) from having a lack of  41 . For the most part, math anxiety is the   42 about doing the math right, our minds draw a   43 and we think we'll fail and of course the more frustrated and anxious our minds become, the  44 the chance for drawing blanks. Added pressure of having time limits on math tests and exams also cause the levels of anxiety to grow for many students.

Where Does Math Anxiety Come From?

Usually math anxiety stems(起源于) from   45 experiences in mathematics. Typically math phobias(恐慌症) have had math presented in such a fashion that it led to limited understanding. Unfortunately, math anxiety is often   46  poor teaching and poor experiences in math which typically leads to math  47 . Many of the students I've encountered with math anxiety have demonstrated an over reliance on procedures in math as opposed to actually understanding the math. When one tries to memorize procedures, rules and routines without much   48 , the math is quickly forgotten and   49 soon sets in. Think about your experiences with one concept — the division of fractions(分数). You probably learned about reciprocals(倒数) and inverses. In other words, ‘It’s not yours to reason why, just invert(反转) and multiply(乘)’. Well, you memorized the rule and it   50  . Why does it work? Do you really understand why it works? Did anyone ever use pizzas or math manipulative(巧妙处理的) to show you why it works? If   51  , you simply memorized the procedure and that was that. Think of math as memorizing all the procedures —   52 if you forget a few? Therefore, with this type of strategy, a good  53 will help, but, what if you don’t have a good memory. Understanding the math is critical. Once students   54 they can do the math, the whole notion of math anxiety can be overcome. Teachers and parents have an important   55 to ensure students understand the math being presented to them.

Jeanne Calment, a French woman, became a record breaker on 17 October, 1995, when at the age of 120 years and 238 days, she became the longest-lived human being on record. A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237 days.

Jeanne Calment lives in a small old people’s home in the south of France; her husband, her only child and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor describes her as being more like a 90-year-old woman in good health than someone of 120. She still has a lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied: A very short one. She also remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her.

So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three important factors. Jeanne Calment has followed two of the tips. She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she used to do exercise every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two glasses of strong red wine a day, and she does smoke (now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Calment might have got very good genes from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.

A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday, Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying: Sorry, I’m still alive!

1.How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?

   A. She is miserable and unhappy.          B. She is cheerful and humorous.

   C. She would like to live much younger.    D. She feels she is going to die very soon.

2. We can owe her good health and long life to _______.

   A. smoking only a little every day

   B. her giving up smoking and drinking

   C. drinking two glasses of strong red wine every day

   D. the good genes from her parents, a healthy diet and some exercise

3. Which of the following word could best replace the word “move” in the fourth paragraph?

   A. deal             B. trick             C. march             D. sport

4. Why does Jeanne Calment say “Sorry, I’m still alive” to the lawyer every year on her birthday?

   A. Because she had an agreement at 80 with the lawyer which was to her advantage.

   B. Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed.

   C. Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house.

   D. Because the house she sold to the lawyer is worth the money he has already paid.

In my long years of teaching, I often ask my student to read the texts until they can recite them, and I tell them that recitation is an important part of their homework. However, some of my students are tired of doing so, thinking that it is both hard and useless. They argue that it takes a long time to recite a text from memory and text itself never appears in a test paper.

In my opinion, it naturally takes time to recite a text, but it is worth doing so. When you are able to recite a text, you are sure to be familiar with the words and expressions. When you need them in reading or writing or doing exercises, they will come to your mind quickly, and so you will give quick response to all kinds of language situation. How can we say that it is useless?

Besides, many students complain that they soon forget what they were once able to recite. This is true, but you don’t need to worry. While you are reading and forgetting the texts, your language level is being raised. Sure you don’t remember your Chinese texts that you once read in the primary school, but now you are able to read novels and newspaper. It was the first snow of winter – an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher, had been through first snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one.

I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots (靴子).

In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didn’t realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence (信心).

I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.

I announced, “They’re on the wrong feet.”

She struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again.

“They’re my brother’s boots, you know,” I said. “I hate them!”

Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying (烦人的) little girl, She pushed and pushed, less gently this time. With a greater sigh, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens (连指手套)?”

I looked into her eyes and said, “I didn’t want to lose them, so I hid them in the toes of my boots.”

1. The little girl was more satisfied with her_________.

A. trousers    B. jacket     C. boots     D. hat

2.Miss Finlayson had difficulty with the girl’s boots mainly because________.

A. the girl got them from her brother   B. the girl put something in them

C. they were on the wrong feet                 D. they did not fit the girl well

3.Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day?

    A. Because the little girl was in her brother’s clothes.

B. Because it was the most exciting day of the winter.

C. Because the little girl played a trick on her.

D. Because the little girl wore a pretty scarf.

4.We can learn from the text that Miss Finlayson_________.

A. was losing confidence in the little girl

B. gradually lost patience with the little girl

C. became disappointed with the little girl

D. was getting bored with the little girl

阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

[l]Fear and pain are two of the most useful things that human beings and animals have, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn himself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself before. A really fearless soldier is not a good soldier because he will soon be killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out.

[2] In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: A plane may crash on your house, or you may get cancer!

[3] The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but to use fear as your servant and guide instead. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.

[4] In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, then you jump out of the way, and all is well.

[5] In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to ___________. For example, you can’t prevent a plane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear is no longer of any use, and you have to try to overcome it.
