Water Pollution and Man
Water pollution affects man’s health, recreational use of water and sense of beauty.
The spread of water-carried disease is of great concern. In highly developed countries in particular, emphasis has changed from concern over bacterial disease to concern over water-carried viral(病毒性的) disease. Viral hepatitis(肝炎), for example, has been found to occur more frequently in cities whose water supplies have comparatively high levels of water impurity. Poisonous chemicals found in streams that are ultimately used for water supplies also create an important public health problem.
It is clear that poisonous chemicals must be excluded from water, but more and more chemicals from new pesticides(杀虫剂), fertilizers, and other new products have been found in water. Since the public health importance of these chemicals is not yet fully known, they are of increasing concern. The chemicals from fertilizers are also finding their way into water supplies from pollution.
As man’s desire for water-based recreation increases, greater demands are placed on the quality of the water. The water must not only but be attractive in appearance but also meet certain other conditions. Sports such as swimming involve direct contact with water, and so water standards are raised higher.
The range of water quality necessary for industrial processes varies greatly with the intended use of the water. The water used in steel mills, foe example, must have a lower chloride(氧化物)level than that accepted for drinking water. Cooling water can often be of comparatively low sanitary(卫生的)quality. A large part of the water used in the paper-making industry an be of relatively low quality in some aspects, but must contain little iron and carbon dioxide.
1. The chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers found in water are of increasing concern because_________.
A. their importance to man’s health has not been completely known
B. they may cause groundwater pollution
they can find their way into water supplies for farmers
they are important factors contributing to the spread of disease

The water contain a higher level of oxygen
The water contain little iron and carbon dioxide
The water be attractive and of high quality
The water standards be appropriate for all sports

water quality necessary for steel mills B. soft water and hard water for industrial
cooling water of low sanitary quality D. water standards for people mills
4. As the passage is not complete, what do you think would follow in its full text?_________

A small town in Tasmania, an island off the south coast of mainland Australia, is making itself an environmental role model by becoming the country's first plastic bag-free town.
Since April 28, Coles Bay's population of 175 and its tourist shoppers have been using reusable paper or cloth bags to carry their shopping.
Ben Keamey, a local businessman who supports the bag ban, said it would cut the amount of waste and prevent damage to native wildlife that try to eat the plastic.
"Most businesses here come from the tourism and that's all based on the environment, so people were pretty supportive," he said.
Every year Australians use more than six billion plastic bags. More than half of these come from the supermarket. Since it takes years for the bags to biodegrade(生物递减分解), tens of millions end up polluting the environment. They kill about 100,000 sea-birds and animals, which mistake bags for food, every year.
Only in the past few months have major Australian supermarkets begun cutting on their use of plastic bags. Environmental groups are pushing for a plastic bag fee like that in Ireland. There, since plastic bags cost 10 pence (about 1 yuan) each, their use has been cut by 90 per cent.
Pollution caused by plastic bags is a big headache for countries all over the world. As early as 1999, Beijing said that only plastic bags of certain thickness could be used. This was to encourage them to be used again and again, since an average of six million plastic bags are used there every there every single day.

A.cause the environmental pollution B.are not easy to be reused
C.are not as good as cloth bags D.are not strong enough

A.Plastic bags kill many animals in Australia each year.
B.Most Australian supermarkets have begun cutting on their use of plastic bags.
C.People at Coles Bay think poor environment may affect their tourism.
D.You have to pay for the plastic bags if you go shopping in Ireland.
4.The example of Coles Bay is to show that ______.
A.people take serious actions to deal with the plastic bag problem
B.people begin to realise the harm of using plastic bags
C.Australia is the first country in solving the plastic bag problem
D.Australians are aware of the importance of protecting the small town
5.Which of the following measures on plastic bags is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.To forbid to use them by law.

A Thirsty World
Three-fourths of the earth’s surface is covered by water, some of which is frozen and most of which is salty. In fact, less than one percent left for all the living things.
Now fresh water is becoming scare, but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of people. Some industries also use amounts of fresh water in the production of things such as steel, paper, and rubber. These factories have polluted water flow into rivers without making it clean. What’s more, people in the city have much dirtied water piped into ditches after cooking every day.
Scientists estimate that the need for fresh water will have doubled by the year 2003. This means that we must find new ways of saving it or producing it. Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their information with others. They are trying to keep their rivers from being polluted. Deep wells are also being dug, and rainwater is being collected in huge artificial lakes. In one way or another, they hope to provide enough water to satisfy the needs of their people. For example, one important wayof producing water is to distill(用蒸馏法提取) it from sea water. After the salt has been removed, sea water can be used not only for drinking but also for industry and irrigation. However, the equipment for distillation process is very expensive. Distilled water might be as dear as gold if pollution goes on.
