题目列表(包括答案和解析)

There was a time when, if a lady got into a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer his seat. But now, things are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window, or if he feels a bit shy, hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone else gets off.

You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners, though. Gone are the days when women could be referred to as weakers without causing trouble. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding(要求) equality(平等) with men, not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as weakers unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share(份额) of the bill. On second thoughts, that is perhaps not a bad idea.

It’s no wonder that men have given up some ways of politeness and consideration(考虑) which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, the man’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings, rather than as weakers or something that can be used to please(取悦) men.

C.    Today women do not enjoy the politeness shown actively to her by men but they considered it pleasant in the past.

D. In order to be equal with men, women have to stand in a bus or train.

2.     A woman may get angry if a man holds a door open for her because________________.

A.    she doesn’t like him to pay too much attention to all her needs

B.    women enjoy opening the door themselves

C.    she feels herself treated as a weaker

D. she thinks it impolite for a man to do so

My parents always raised me to have strong values and hold firm to my confidence in life, and this was never more proved than when a situation arose when it would be easy for most people to ignore it.
A gentleman at my father’s work smelled awful and neglected his behavior, and as the months went by, he showed signs of confusion. After being told to pick up papers at another building, he would be found sitting at his desk staring at his shoes; after being reminded (to which he would completely believe he hadn’t been told the first time), he would be found once again sitting at his desk in the same position. This happened to worsening degrees over a few months and his coworkers either ignored it or were ignorant to this due to a lack of social association with the man.
My father began to mentally record all of this and finally sat down with him one day when he was found two hours after work was out, sitting in his car, looking like he didn’t know where to go. Apparently the gentleman was in the beginning/middle stages of Alzheimer’s and there was someone who used his forgetfulness as a reason to ask him for money every few days. My father took this man to a hospital (for the first time in years) to be properly treated, and then got a caretaker to watch over his condition. He then went to the man’s house and helped him sort out all of his financial matters and get his retirement set up; they went to the bank and had a government worker ensure that his bills would be paid for and his children would no longer get to treat him like a personal ATM.
That my father took his much personal time to help another man that so many had forgotten or would choose to neglect, or even make fun of, truly shows his character

Mistreat(虐待) your animals and someone might take them from you.

Allen (not his real name) is driving north out of Virginia in the middle of the night, with stolen property in the back of his van.But Allen isn’t a criminal—in fact he normally would never dream of breaking the law.

The “property” he stole is a dog he calls Flash.Allen doesn’t particularly want Flash in fact,in a few hours he’ll drop him off at a stranger’s house and never see him again.“I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing,”he explains.“The owner was plainly neglecting (忽视) the dog,but the police wouldn’t do anything about it.”

For over a year,Flash had been tied to a tree in front of someone’s house.“He was sick and weak,”says Allen.“More than once I saw the owner kick him for no reason at all.”Allen had repeatedly tried to get the owner to take better care of the animal,or to give it away to someone who would. Finally,he took matters into his own hands—in the dead of night,he took Flash off his chain and drove away with him.

An hour later,Flash had a new license and he_was_treated_by_a_veterinarian_who_knew_better_than_to_ask_questions.

Pictures of the dog were put up on animal rescue websites, asking for someone to adopt the dog.A couple in New York offered to take the dog,and animal lovers in states along the way agreed to provide transportation.

Nobody can say for sure how many animals like Flash are “rescued” every year;receiving stolen property is a crime,so rescuers tend to stay in the shadows. But a growing number of empty collars are because of their work as more and more animals find their way to loving homes.
