The 30 miles of steep roads that snake through the mountains of Logan Canyon in Utah are enough to make most drivers′hands sweat. But Andersen, a 46-year-old father of four, wasn′t expecting any trouble on the road last New Year′s Eve, when he set off for a ski trip to the Bear River Mountains with nine-year-old daughter Mia, four-old son Baylor, and nine-year-old neighbor Kenya.Andersen had driven through the Canyon hundreds of times over the years.
The weather was fine-but the higher they drove, the more slippery the roads became.Rounding a sharp U-turn at mile marker473, Andersen saw a truck that had skated off the road and immediately tapped his brakes. In an instant, the car was sliding at 25 miles per hour toward the shoulder of the highway, then rolling down a steep ten-foot dam toward the extremely cold Logan River. As it hit the water, the car tipped toward the passenger side, hesitated, and then rolled onto its roof and sank into the river.
There was no time to tell the kids what to do.The crash had broken a few windows, and within seconds, the upside-down car was filled with water. “It was frightening how fast we were completely underwater,”remembers Andersen, a soft-spoken product development manager.“You′re thinking, is this how it′s all going to end?”
Having lost all sense of direction, Andersen began to search the freezing water for the kids.Mia had been right next to him in the front seat; now, in the blackness, he couldn′t find her.“I thought, if I don′t get out, maybe none of us are going to get out.” Andersen got out of his seat belt, swam through a broken window, and, deeply and quickly, breathed air at the surface. That′s when he saw a group of men, about ten in all, appear at the top of the dam.One after another, they raced down into the water.Helping onto safety all the three children, they began to shout at the father,“Who else is in the car?”Andersen says respectfully,“It was like the sight of angels (天使).”

Rocky Lyons was five years old when his mother, Kelly, was driving along the country road with him. He was asleep on the front seat of their truck, with his feet resting on her lap. As his mom drove carefully down the winding country road, she turned onto a narrow bridge. The truck hit a rock and slid off the road. She attempted to bring it back up onto the road by pressing hard on the gas pedal and turning the steering wheel to the left. But Rocky’s foot got caught between her leg and the steering wheel and she lost control of the truck.[ X.JTYJY.COM/]
The truck fell into a 20-foot ravine(峡谷). When it hit bottom, Rocky woke up. “What happened, Mama?” he asked. “Our wheels are pointing toward the sky.”
Kelly was seriously wounded and blinded by blood. “I’ll get you out, Mama,” announced Rocky, who had surprisingly escaped injury. He climbed out from under Kelly, slid through the open window and tried to yank(用力拉)his mother out. But she didn’t move.
“Just let me sleep,” begged Kelly, who was out of consciousness. Rocky insisted, “Mom, you can’t go to sleep.”
Rocky managed to push Kelly out of the truck and told her he’d climb up to the road and stop a car to get help. Fearing that no one would be able to see her little boy in the dark, Kelly refused to let him go alone. Instead they slowly moved up to the road. The pain was so great that Kelly wanted to give up, but Rocky wouldn’t let her.
Rocky kept repeating the inspirational phrase, “I know you can, I know you can.” When they finally reached the road, Rocky broke into tears seeing his mother’s torn face clearly for the first time. Waving his arms and shouting, “Please stop!” the boy stopped a truck. His mother was sent to hospital.
It took 8 hours to rebuild Kelly’s face. She looks quite different today---“I used to have a straight long nose, thin lips and high cheekbones; now I’ve got a flat cheeks and much bigger lips”--- but she has few scars and has recovered from her injuries.
Rocky’s heroics were big news. Everyone was surprised at this little boy’s power. “It’s not like I wanted it to happen,” The boy explained. “ I just did what anyone would have done.” “If it weren’t for Rocky, I’d have died,” said his mother.

Every fast-food employee knows that the drive-through window is the worst position. The window sticks with constant ice; the roar of engines hurts your ? ; your words are lost in the howling wind.
On a ? ? ? afternoon, everything changed.
Every once in a while, the sub-zero temperatures seal a ? ? ? windows shut. Drivers don’t exactly enjoy having to stand outside in the cold,? ? ? their orders into a speaker box, when they expect to drive through on their heated leather seats. In such cases, most customers tend to show their annoyance to the employees.
This woman was ? ? ? .
“I’ll get the next car’s ? ? ? as well,” she said as she came up to the window to pay. She stood outside, ? ? ? much snow on her hair. Though she was obviously freezing, her bright ? ? ? lit up her face like a fire.
“You can’t ? ? ? their drinks,” I said, confused and tired.
“No, but I’ll buy them,” she said. “Pay it forward and all that.”
Completely puzzled, I charged her as ? ? ? , and when the next customer arrived at the window I explained what had just happened. I watched as his ? ? ?? changed — first angry to be out in the cold, then? ? ? ? at the random act of kindness, and finally, delighted by his? ? ? .
“I suppose I’ll pay for the next order then,” he replied, nodding and waving at the impatient driver ? ? him. He ? ? ? over the cash and received his pre-paid hot drink.
The trend continued. Customers arrived annoyed, only to leave ? ? ? and pleased. Some were shocked to spend much more than they had expected, ? ? ? others ended up receiving their order for less than half the price.
Five vehicles passed, then ten, then twenty. No one refused to pay. Customers stood at my window ?? ? ?? a fist-full of change to buy drinks for a complete stranger. Cars drove off, honking (鸣笛) and ?? ? ?? their thanks.
It only takes one customer, one person, to change the entire ? ? ? of traffic. It only takes one moment, one smile, to warm up even the coldest of days.
