The real problem with pollution is people -- the way people think about their environment. We're all unwilling to accept the fact that our natural resources are fixed,in fact, since the earth was created. We want to go on using virgin (原始的) materials. We aren't educated to reusing resources,or even placing a value on “waste” products. We're a crisis (危机) society. Now,we are fearful of losing the use of our water and air by pollution. From one point,it's probably a good thing that we care about them because now we'll begin to adjust (调整) our thinking on the values of natural resources and reuse. We once thought of water and air as free. They're not,not any more free than the land is ,people haven't wanted to be educated on the part they must play in settling our environmental problems.

(1)From the very beginning of the earth, our natural resources are ________.

[ ]

A.free
B.limited
C.wasted
D.valuable

(2)The environmental crisis can be turned around and settled if people ________.

[ ]

  A.insist on using virgin materials

  B.change their basic ideas

  C.are educated well

D.clean up their rivers and lakes

(3)One of the important points in this passage is that________.

[ ]

A.people should get some education about recycling

B.governments ought to pay more money for education

C.we should control the usage of virgin materials

D.people might have known how to use the limited resources

[ ]

A.there is pollution in our country

B.we must take action as soon as possible

C.we have difficulty in finding ways to settle environmental problems

D.we are sad because of our crisis society

(5)The solution to the environmental problems lies in the fact that________.

  C.we stop people from wasting

D.people know the values of natural resources

Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have 1 how difficult it is to write a 2 children’s book.Either the author has aimed too 3 , so that the children can’t follow What is in his(or more often, her)story, 4 the story seems to be talking to the readers.

The best children’s books are neither very difficult nor very simple, and 5 both the 6 who hears the story and the adult who 7 it.Unfortunately, there are in fact 8 books like this, 9 the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not 10 to solve.

This may be why many of books regarded as 11 of children’s literature were in tact written for 12 .“Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland” is perhaps the most 13 of this.

Children, left for themselves.often 14 the worst possible interest in literature.Just leave a child in bookshop or 15 and he will 16 willingly choose the books written in an imaginative way, or have a look at most children’s comics, full of the stories and jokes which are the 17 of teachers and right-thinking parents.

Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash children into 18 our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so 19 that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the 20 books. So I suppose we’ll just have to compromise over that bedtime story.

Thermometers are very useful tools. We use them to measure our temperature when we are sick, We use them to measure the temperature of the air.We also put them into the roast to see if it has finished cooking.Knowing how to read a thermometer can be very helpful.

A thermometer is made of a hollow tube with a bulb at the end filled with mercury. When the mercury gets hot it expands and moves up the tube; when the mercury mols down it contracts and moves down the tube.

In 1714 a famous German scientist named Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit marked where the mercury was in the tube when the thermometer was in a mixture of salt and snow.He called this point 0 degrees(0°).Then he marked the mercury height when the thermometer was in a man’s mouth. He then drew equally spaced marks between the two points. On this scale the temperature of ice that is about to melt is 32℉, and the temperature of water that has just begun to boil is 212℉.The F sthnds for Fahrenheit.

In 1742 a Swedish scientist, Celsius, made a different scale. He marked 0°as the freezing point of water and 100°as the boiling point, with 100 points between the two. This is the Centigrade scale, which we write as 42℃, for example. We use the Fahrenheit scale for weather, cooking and medicine; but in science we always use the Centigrade scale.

Here are some thermometers, with the mercury levels marked, and the temperatures given:
