If you’ ve visited London recently.the chances are that you passed through the tourist attraction of Trafalgar Square. But since July.the square has looked a little different. There’s a statue being put on top of a plinth. But unlike the other statues in the square.this one is alive and kicking. The project.called One & Other.was created by the British artist Antony Gormley.who was invited by the Mayor of London to create a sculpture atop the vacant fourth plinth in the northwestern corner of London’s Trafalgar Square.Instead of sculpting a statue from bronze or marble.Gormley was moved by the idea to place real people on the plinth. The idea was to feature one performer or “plinther one hour in a continuous 24hour cycle for 100 days straight.A website has been broadcasting it continuously and the last day of the project is October 19. Antony Gormley said.“ The idea is very simple.Through putting a person onto the plinth.the body becomes a symbol. In the context of Trafalgar Square with its military and historical statues.this elevation of everyday life to the position formerly occupied by monumental art allows us to reflect on the diversity.vulnerability and feature of the individual in contemporary society. It’ s about people coming together to do something extraordinary and unpredictable. It could be tragic but it could also be funny. My aunt.Adrianne Foglia.was one of the participants to perform on the plinth. At midnight one night late last month.she climbed up to the top and unfolded a huge banner that said “In Your Life.Who Do You Remember? Who Would You Thank? I watched online as she began to tell in detail the long list of people who had touched her life.As she spoke.she wrote their names on a canvas in colored markers to create an abstract mosaic next to the words “People are the colors of our lives. Each one of us is a canvas. I appreciated her performance very much.However.I also noticed some worrying “plinthers .Ollie Campbell threw out a live chicken and two blowup dolls from the mouth before running naked across the square.pursued by the police.Liz Crow sat in a wheelchair in a Nazi uniform. The project has been criticized as a “negative view of society.Jonathan Jones wrote in the Guardian.“ One & Other is a portrait of a society in which people will try anything to make their voices heard...but no one can hear what they’ re saying. 1.How many participants are needed to act as live statues? 查看更多

The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy(喜剧), that is exactly what happens.
Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical(典型的) American way of life, except for one thing-he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!
The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.
Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic(经典).
The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you’ll enjoy Dave!

Do you ever run out of great books to read? So what should I read next? Is fast-paced crime fiction your thing?

Try the new Patricia Cornwell book, Scarpetta (Putnam). She is such an able writer and handles complex forensic(法庭的) intelligence with ease. You need to be prepared, though, for the world you're entering—this isn't for the faint of heart, let's say.

If peace is more your thing, try Mary Pipher's wonderful new book, Seeking Peace: Chronicles of the Worst Buddhist in the World (Riverhead). Mary is a lovely, comfortable writer who takes the reader through her personal awakening after reputation and fortune came her way. Even if you've never experienced life as a bestselling writer (as she has done, in her book years back, Reviving Ophelia), you'll totally understand and sympathize with her renewed need for privacy, distance and quiet.

What if you want a straightforward, totally thrilling read with vivid characters, set about World War II? You cannot go wrong with Jim Lehrer's new novel, Oh, Johnny (Random House), about a young Marine whose life is changed forever when he meets a woman on his way to war. His relationship with her lasts him through danger and hardship, and there's an impressive ending. See our interview with the productive novelist/newsman in the current issue of Reader's Digest (March, on stands now), by the way, for insight into the very talented Mr. Lehrer and what interests him.

Well, what about something wickedly funny and totally offbeat? Does the name Carrie Fisher do anything for you? Try her vivid and new life in Hollywood and elsewhere, Wishful Drinking (Simon & Schuster). Be prepared for humor as sharp as knives.

61. What does the writer want to tell us by the underlined sentence?

A. The world is complex and hard.          B. Scarpetta is a thriller.

C. The fiction is hard to understand.     D. Society is hard to fit into.

62. Which of the following is true of Mary Pipher?

A. She is an adventurous writer.   B. She doesn’t care about fortune.

C. Her books normally sell well.   D. She can help you achieve writing skills.

63. To get further information about Jim Lehrer, you may________.

A. go to Reader’s Digest issued in March     B. go to Random House

C. analyze the characters in Oh, Johnny    D. read the novel Oh, Johnny

64. Which book isn’t directly based on the writer’s own life?__________________

A. Seeking Peace.            B. Reviving Ophelia.

C. Wishful Drinking.         D. Oh, Johnny.
