It’s interesting that the arrival of snow has effect on people in different countries.

For some countries it is an important happening to celebrate each year, while for others a catastrophe(灾害)or even a wonder.

But there are countries between these two kinds that normally expect snow some time over the winter months, but never receive snow regularly or in the same quantities every year.Britain is one of them, for which the arrival of snow quite simply causes problems.Within hours of the first snowfalls, however light, roads are blocked, trains and buses have to stop in the middle of the way.Normal communication is affected as well:telephone calls become difficult and the post immediately takes more time than usual. And almost within hours, there are also certain shortages-bread, vegetables and other things-not because all these things can no longer be produced or sent to shops, but mainly because people are frightened and go out and store up with food and so on…just for fear that something bad should happen.

But why does snow have this effect? After all, the Swiss, the Austrians and the Canadians don’t have such problems. It is simply because there is not enough planning and preparation. We need money to buy equipment to deal with snow and ice.To keep the roads clear, for example, requires snow-ploughs(扫雪机)and machines to spread salt. The reason why a country like Britain does not buy snow-ploughs is that they are used for a few days in any one year, and the money could be more useful in other things such as hospital, education, helping the old and so on.

Cooks around the globe like it; housewives have used it for centuries to add flavor to their cooking and grandmothers have always had some doubt about what our science has found out about it. Chinese garlic(大蒜) is a wonder drug.

Garlic is one of the most effective and common medicines for the common cold. The best way to eat it is in hot soup, but another interesting way is to put some slices of raw garlic over bread. It helps clear up the nose as well as decongesting (解除充血) the chest. In fact, a slice of raw garlic eaten every day keeps almost all illness away. But most of us are quite afraid of its strong smell so we do not take this seriously.

There is a word of caution, however. Since it is a warming and drying herb, people with a hot body should use it carefully. For some people, garlic may cause stomach pains or some other problems. Also in many cases, garlic has been known to make conditions like sleeplessness even worse. It can affect the mind and concentration, so garlic is best avoided for people performing activities that require concentration. People who easily get angry or have a red face should use garlic carefully.

In many cases, garlic may cause heat in the body. Also, because it has such strong chemical elements, some people simply cannot stand it.

Another point of caution is that since it is a blood-thinning agent, patients are advised to consult their doctors before they start taking garlic in regular quantities. In a healthy person, its intake can keep a person free of all kinds of physical discomfort over a long period of time.

26. What do we know about garlic?

A. Few cooks like using it when cooking dishes.

B. It’s not effective in treating the common cold.

C.Old people are more in favor of eating garlic than young people.

D. There’s more than one way to take garlic as a medicine.

27.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the third paragraph?

A. Eating much garlic makes it easy for people to sleep.

B. Garlic can affect the mind and concentration of people.

C. People who suffer from stomach pains are not advised to eat garlic.

D. People who easily get angry are advised to use garlic carfully.

28. What should patients do before starting to take garlic in regular quantities?

A. Ask for a doctor’s advice.

B. Have garlic cooked.

C. Take other medicine together.

D. Spend more time sleeping.

29. It can be concluded from the passage that

A. the more garlic people take, the healthier they will be.

B. garlic is called the wonder drug for its strong smell.

C. garlic is not suitable for all people.

D. garlic may make people free of all illness for the whole life.

30. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. How garlic is used in cooking.

B. The uses of garlic and some health warnings.

C. The history of garlic use.

D. A cure for the common cold.
