It’s summertime, and the living is easy. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is on vacation, weather is great, and most of all, because we all deserve (应该得到) a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.
Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants (移民) had to travel to get to New World. Once they arrived, they settled along the East Coast. But they weren’t content to stay there. Explorers (探险者) and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories. Later, settlers moved west to develop these new areas. As a remit of westward migration (迁移), Americans eventually (最后) occupied (占领) the whole continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that the average American moves every five years.
Besides their habit of changing addresses, Americans are used to travelling. Some people make long-distance commutes(通勤) to work daily. Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel.
Most Americans prefer to travel within their nation’s borders. Why? For one thing, it’s cheaper than traveling abroad, and there’s no language problem. But besides that, the vast American territory offers numerous (大量的) tourist attractions. Nature lovers can enjoy beaches, mountains, lakes and a wealth of natural wonders. Major cities offer visitors a multitude (大量)of urban (都市的) delights: The convenience of modem freeways, railways and airplanes makes travel in America as easy as pie.
Many American vacations are as unique (独特的) as the people who take them. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more “family friendly” vacation resorts (度假胜地) offer special programs for children. History buffs (爱好者) seek out famous historical sites and museums. Environmentalists (环境保护论者) prefer green vacation. Some people find sea cruises (海上航游)relaxing and refreshing (使振作). Others hit the water to go fishing, skiing.
Americans aren’t the only people in the world who travel. International business, mass (大众的) communication and jet airplanes have created a world of globetrotters (周游世界者).People all over world enjoy going abroad to travel. And no matter where they live, people enjoy visiting scenic (风景优美的)spots in their own country. But being on the go makes Americans what they are now. In America, almost everybody is a tourist sometime.

No wonder English poses(构成)such a challenge to non-native speakers．This most global of languages has more words than any other, over 1 million according to the Global Language Monitor．Out of this number, the average American college student has mastered between 8,000-15,000．
Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up．They make out long lists of words－often in alphabetical order－and simply memorize their definitions(释义)and Chinese meanings．
The bad news is that definition memorization does them little good when it comes to college entrance tests like the SATs．For these tests, a student needs to understand, not simply parrot words studied．
The good news is that there are better ways to build an academic English vocabulary．
Vocabulary learning system
The first thing to do is to develop an organized, but easy means of collecting and learning new words．We recommend a card system that includes the following information：
Word－Simple Definition in English－Phrase or Sentence－Related Words－Synonyms(同义词)and Antonyms(反义词)－with a Chinese translation on the reverse(背面)of the card．
The advantage of this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word but a group of related words．
Keep your cards on a detachable(可分离的)metal ring, so you can carry them around and add to your collection daily．

Work Attitude
This may seem like a no-brainer, but when you are traveling, leave your work attitude behind．Traveling is not a task to be accomplished; it can be an enjoyable and memorable experience for both you and your pets as long as you have the right attitude．
Control
Part of the joy of traveling with pets is dealing with the unexpected．You can't control everything and trying to do so will only end in frustration and anger．Knowing that things will happen beyond your control will bring great relief to you and your pets．Messes happen; accidents happen．Once you accept that, traveling with your pets will be far easier to manage．
Selfishness
Traveling with pets often requires an extreme amount of selflessness．Your pets rely on you to take care of their needs, and sometimes you will need to put their needs before your own．Leave your selfish ambitions behind when traveling with your pets．They need your attention and care more than anything else because of the stresses and strains of traveling．
Traveling with pets can and will be a joy if you remember to leave these five items behind．It can be difficult at times to handle, but the traveling will go well if you can manage to do so．
