题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Two men, Alan and Henry, both seriously ill, shared a hospital room. Alan was allowed to sit up in his bed and his bed was next to the room’s only window. Henry had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours, of their wives, families, their homes and their jobs. And every afternoon when Alan, in the bed next to the window, could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm among flowers. Trees and skyline could be seen in the distance. As he described all this, Henry, on the other side of the room, would close his eyes and imagine the scene.

One warm afternoon Alan described a parade (游行) passing by. Although Henry could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never got to see anything? It doesn’t seem fair. Henry felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sight, his envy grew and soon let him down. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window—and that thought now controlled his life.

Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling. Alan began to cough. He was choking. Henry watched in the dim room as the struggling man tried hard to reach for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence—deathly silence.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, Henry asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he struggled to take his first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He looked out, but faced a black wall.

When I was young, I went looking for gold in California.I never found enough to make me rich. But I did discover a beautiful part of the country. It was called "the Stanislau".The Stanislau was like Heaven on Earth. It had bright green hills and deep forests where soft winds touched the trees.

Other men, also looking for gold, had reached the Stanislau hills of California many years before I did. They had built a town in the valley with sidewalks and stores, banks and schools. They had also built pretty little houses for their families.

At first, they found a lot of gold in the Stanislau hills. But their good luck did not last. After a few years, the gold disappeared.By the time I reached the Stanislau, all the people were gone, too.

Grass now grew in the streets. And the little houses were covered by wild rose bushes.Only the sound of insects filled the air as I walked through the empty town that summer day so long ago. Then, 1 realized I was not alone after all.

A man was smiling at me as he stood in front of one of the little houses. This house was not covered by wild rose bushes.A nice little garden in front of the house was full of blue and yellow flowers.White curtains hung from the windows and floated in the soft summer wind.

Still smiling, the man opened the door of his house and signed to me.1 went inside and could not believe my eyes.I had been living for weeks in rough mining camps with other gold miners. We slept on the hard ground, ate canned beans from cold metal plates and spent our days in the difficult search for gold.

Here in this little house, my spirit seemed to come to life again.

I saw a bright rug on the shining wooden floor.Pictures hung all around the room. And on little tables there were seashells, books and china vases full of flowers.A woman had made this house into a home.

The pleasure I felt in my heart must have shown on my face. The man read my thoughts."Yes," he smiled, "it is all her work.Everything in this room has felt the touch of her hand."

One of the pictures on the wall was not hanging straight. He noticed it and went to fix it.He stepped back several times to make sure the picture was really straight. Then he gave it a gentle touch with his hand.

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案。

The moon is nearer to us than the sun. It is about 240,000 miles away. The sun is much farther, 93 million miles from us. When we look at the moon, it looks almost as large as the sun. That is because it is much nearer. The sun is really much larger.

The sun is a star. It is a ball of fire; it sends our light. The moon is rock and hard.It isn't hot. It doesn't send out light; it reflects light. This means that the moon doesn't make its own light. The sun sends out its light to the moon. Then the moon sends the sun's light back to the earth.

The moon is very different from the earth. There isn't any air on it. It is both very hot and very cold there. The part in the sunshine is very hot, but the part in the dark can be 200°F(129°C )below zero.

There aren't any trees, grass, or water on the moon. All you can see are rocks and deserts. There are many mountains that are from two to five miles high. There are round holes in the moon called craters. There are at least 30,000 of them on the moon. Some of the craters are half a mile wide, but some are as large as 160 miles wide.

A moon is a satellite, a smaller object in space that goes around a planet. Our moon goes around our earth. It takes it about 28 days to go around the earth once. At the same time, the moon itself also turns. This takes about 28 days too. This is why one side of the moon is always turned away from us. Spaceships went around the moon in the 1960's. They took the first picture of the other side of the moon.

In July 1969, two men from the United States stepped on the moon from a spaceship. They took some machines there to make some tests. They brought back 48 pounds of rocks from the moon.

That first trip to the moon was very important. It was the first time that human beings had walked on a heavenly body other than the earth. It was a beginning. It was

a step to all the other planets and stars.
