题目列表(包括答案和解析)

A friend and I were standing in line at the grocery store the other day, and I was telling her how lazy my children were.I had come in from work that morning, and like most times, my house was wrecked.

“I believe children nowadays are just out for what they can get. They can never help keep our house clean.” I said, feeling unhappy.

“Do you know how happy you are?” a woman behind us asked.“I would love to go home and find my house a mess.I wouldn’t mind my floor being dirty.Nor would I mind the dirty clothes being piled high.I wouldn’t even mind anyone talking about my dirty home.I would love it.I would love to kick my way through the house just to get to my kids and be able to hug them, kiss them and tell them how much I love them. You see, my two children were killed in an accident. My house stays clean; my clothes stay put up; the dishes are done.”

“There are no fingerprints on my walls. There are no sounds of arguing, either. So you see, you are very lucky.I would give anything to be going through what you are now! How I’d love to be able to hold my kids, wipe away their tears and share their dreams! I wouldn’t care how my house looked.I would be happy just to have them.”

Now if you come into my house and see a big mess, you can think bad thoughts if you want, but I feel greatly blessed.(268 words)

It is hard to predict(预言)how science is going to turn out, and whether it is really good science, it is impossible to predict. If the things to be found are actually new, they must be unknown in advance. You cannot make choices on this matter. You either have science or you don’t and if you have it you have to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information, along with the neat and useful bits.
The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we don’t know enough about nature.Indeed, I regard this as the major discovery of the past hundred years of biology. It is, in its way, a clear piece of news.It would have amazed the brightest minds of the 18th century to be told by any of us how little we know and how strange the way ahead seems. In earlier times, they either pretended to understand how things worked or simply made up stories to give answers. Now that we have begun exploring seriously, we are catching sight of how huge the questions are, and how far from being answered.Because of this, we are sorry. It is not so bad being ignorant(无知的)if you are totally ignorant; the hard thing is knowing in some details the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not so bad spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels that can yet be trusted.
But we are making a beginning, and there ought to be some satisfaction. There are probably no questions we can think up that can’t be answered, sooner or later.Within our limits, we should be able to work our way through to all our answers, if we keep at it long enough, and pay attention.

A.would surprise the brightest minds of the 18th  century.

52.It can be inferred from the passage that scientists of the 18th century________.
A.thought that they knew a great deal and could deal with most problems of science.
B.knew that they were ignorant and wanted to know more about nature
C.were afraid of facing up to the realities of scientific research
D.did more harm than good in man’s understanding of nature
53.Which of the following is NOT mentioned about scientists in earlier times?
A.They falsely declared to know all about nature.
B.They did not believe in results from scientific observation.
C.They paid little attention to the problems they didn’t understand.
D.They invented false rules to explain things they didn’t understand.
54.What is the writer’s attitude towards science?
A.He is sorry because of the ignorance of scientists.
B.He is delighted because of the latest scientific findings.
C.He is doubtful because of the great difficulties in scientific research.
D.He is confident though he knows well the great difficulties in scientific research.
55.The writer believes that sooner or later________.
A.man can’t deal with all the problems he can find because of the limits of human knowledge.
B.man can find solutions to whatever questions concerning nature he can think up
C.questions concerning nature are outsiede the field of scientific research
D.man can think up all the questions and answer them all.

People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man's release of completely new and often artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance , such as oil tankers into the sea.

The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new and complex goods are produce there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizer cannot restore the balance.

Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in term of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying ,excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.

45.The underlined phrase “disposed of ”in the second paragraph means_______.

A. dealt with               B. exposed

C. disapproved of           D. collected

46. In the writer’s view ,the more new goods, _______.

A. the less pollution

B. the harder pollution can be prevented

C. the more pollution there will be

D. the more easily pollution can be controlled

47.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. We can do much to reduce pollution.

B. The government is trying hard to stop pollution.

C. Individuals know how to get rid of the habit of littering everywhere.

D. We can’t stop buying unnecessary things.

48. People can help solve the problem of pollution by _______.

A. urging their governments to control litter and waste

B. making anti-pollution advertisements

C. cutting down the use of oil and other oil products

D. reducing unnecessary buying, over-consumption and careless disposal of wastes
