Every summer many people, girls and women as well as boys and men try to swim from England to France or from France to England. The distance at the nearest point is only about 20 miles but because of the strong tides(海浪)the distance that must be swum is usually more than twice as far.
The first man who succeeded in swimming the English Channel(英吉利海峡)was Captain Web, an Englishman. This was in August 1875. He landed in France 21 hours later after he jumped into the water at Dover. Since then there have been many successful swimmers and time has been shortened. In 1960 a Canadian crossed in 10 hours and 23 minutes.
Because the sea is usually cold, swimmers cover their bodies with grease(油脂).This helps them to keep out the cold. They can also eat something, because some men go with them in small boats.

Aren't you glad that mothers and fathers give names to their children? Names are the quickest and easiest and the most friendly way to say who's who. Another nice thing about names is that they do not change as people do. Yesterday Mary's hair was long. Today her hair is short. But her name is still Mary. On his birthday Uncle Tom didn't have moustaches. At Christmas time he did. But his name is still Tom. People are always changing, a little or a lot. But people's names are the same.
A name sometimes says something nice about someone. Girls' names often come from words meaning “pretty”, “happy”, “loving”…Boy's names are often borrowed from words which mean “strong”, “brave”…
