While most kids are playing iPad games or going out with friends, American boy Dean Miller is helping out at a fire department in Ohio.

Dean is 14 years old. He wants to help in every way he can. He goes out on calls with the fireman and helps clean the trucks, windows and floors.

“It feels really great because you know you were helping people to keep them safe,” said Dean.

Dean’s grandfather and great-grandfather were both firemen. His grandfather was once a fire chief(长官), so Dean was able to start helping early on. Dean knows what firemen do, so it is natural for him to become a volunteer. Dean is the youngest volunteer at the department. The older he becomes, the more responsibilities(责任) he has to take on.

The volunteer work also helped him a lot. He learned skills for the future. Dean wants to be a fireman someday.

“I feel that volunteering is important. If you volunteer for something, you know what you’re doing when you get a job there, and you don’t need as much training,” Dean said.

Because the fire team cannot be everywhere at once, the volunteers must play important roles(作用). They need to stay at certain places to call the fire team if there is a fire. He also talked about how much he had learned from volunteering at the fire department. “I’m learning that it takes courage(勇气), and it takes a team to help people,” he said.

  A. Dean enjoys playing iPad like other kids

B. Dean wants to be like his grandfather

  C. Dean makes much money as a fireman

D. Dean will take on fewer responsibilities at 15.
