When people say “culture”, we think of art and history. But one very famous symbol in American culture is a cartoon. We all know and love the black mouse with two large round ears ―Mickey Mouse. Over 80 years ago, he first appeared in the cartoon Steamboat Willie. When this cartoon came out in New York on November 18, 1928, it was the first cartoon with sound and music. The man behind Mickey was Walt Disney. He became very rich and successful. In the 1930s, he made 87 cartoons with Mickey.
Some people might ask how this cartoon animal became so popular. One of the main reasons is that Mickey was like a common man, but he always tried to face any danger. In his early films, Mickey was unlucky and had many problems such as losing his house or girlfriend, Minnie. However, he was always ready to try his best. People went to the cinema to see the “little man” win. Most of them wanted to be like Mickey.
On November 18, 1979, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame(星光大道). Today’s cartoons are usually not so simple as little Mickey Mouse, but everyone still knows and loves him. Who has a pair of ears more famous than Mickey’s?

Art lovers around the world have thought about this question for so many years: what is the secret behind the Mona Lisa’s smile?
However, they can ask Mona Lisa herself in the interactive exhibition (交互式展览) in Beijing. This exhibition brings the 500-year-old painting to life.
Now Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting can move her head and wave (挥舞) her hand in 3D, and even answer questions. She can answer the questions about her life, her age and so on. But when she talks she doesn’t speak Italian but Chinese like: “Da jia hao, wo jiao Mengna Lisha. Hen gao xing jian dao ni men.”
The new, digital (数码的) picture of Mona Lisa is the center piece of the World Classic Interactive Arts Exhibition in Beijing. You can also see other world-famous paintings such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. Last Supper is another picture that they made alive with 3D. In this picture, Jesus (基督耶稣) can walk and talk with his believers (信徒).
It took the organizer Wang Hui and over 400 digital artists in South Korea two years to make the picture, at a cost of around 50 million yuan.

When a close friend dies, it often forces you to consider your own death. The more you have in
common with the friend, the more his death will make you wonder about your own. Sometimes you
will naturally say to yourself, "it could just as easily have been me." Such a death has a way of reminding
us how fragile life is, and it may cause you to reassess (重新评价) the direction of your own life.
Jack's story is a good example. A successful businessman making a lot of money, Jack didn't spend
as much time with his family as he wanted. His job required him to work long hours. But three years
ago one of his best friends, a man who worked in the same office, had a heart attack. He died while
celebrating his daughter's eighteenth birthday in a restaurant. He was only fifty years old.
Not long after his friend's death, Jack started to have a chest pain. Finally he had a good physical
check-up. He received a clean bill of health. But the chest pain continued. He kept thinking of the death
of his friend. Jack thought about how much his friend missed in life and he saw how hard it was for his
friend's family to manage after he passed away.
Jack realized that he didn't want to end up his life that way. He talked his feelings over with his wife
and children, and decided to change his way of life. The family moved to a small town where he stared
a simple life. Now he is running a small art gallery. He is relaxed, and says he has never been so happy in
his life. And he has got no more chest pain.

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been
handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she
had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded (回应) with a polite "Why, thank you" , but you knew you
had missed the mark
. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good and bad) tell
about your personal qualities (品质)?
Choosing the right gift is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy-the ability to put yourselfinto someone else's
head and heart. We're all able to do this; in fact, we're born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest
period of childhood, however, it needs to be reinforced (加强) by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn't,
we're not able to understand other people's feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can
many other emotional qualities.
Think back to the presents you've given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection,
how much you spent your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the
package. Keep in mind that what you choose shows your mner world. Of course, you may express yourself
differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Paying no attention
to the tradition won't make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
1. The underlined expression "you had missed the mark" means "you had failed to _____."
A. make her feel better
B. keep your friendship
C. receive a present in return
D. get the expected effect
2. In the third paragraph, the writer tells us that _____.
A. attention should be paid to the receivers' responses
B. one learns from what he did in the past
C. the choice of gifts shows one's emotional qualities
D. one should spend more time choosing gifts
3. The best possible title for this passage is _____.
A. Ways of Choosing Gifts
B. An Important Tradition
