  Mr. Johnson wanted to join in a bicycle race. He said he would win. Mrs. Johnson only smiled. She knew he could not be in the race. But she also knew he would try. Mr. Johnson went to see the judges(裁判). But they did not let him race. “You're too old,” said one of the judges. “The men go from one end of the country to the other. That's more than one thousand miles. You would never make it. ”

  “We'll see, ”said Mr. Johnson.

  At last the race began. Fifty strong young men got on their bicycles. One of the judges fired a gun. And the young men were off!

  Close behind them came Mr. Johnson. His long beard waved in the wind. “You can keep me out of the race, ”he said to himself. “But you can't keep me of the road. ”

  And then Mr. Johnson rode in front m me fifty strong young men!

  After a while he came to a small town. The street was lined with people. They cheered when Mr. Johnson rode by.

  “Look, Daddy,” said a small boy, “There goes Super grandpa!”

  A newspaperman heard the boy. He took a picture of Mr. Johnson and wrote a story about him. From then on everybody in the country was cheering for “Super grandpa. ”

  For more than six days Super grandpa rode on.

  At last he crossed the finish line ----a day ahead of the strong young men. All the town was there to meet him. Everybody cheered and cheered. Children danced around Super grandpa.

  People all over the country now knew him. And they loved him. He was their SUPER grandpa!
