Head teacher, teachers, grandparents, parents and classmates, I’m very proud that I have been chosen to speak to you all today. I’m a bit nervous as I’ve never made a speech before to so many people, so please forgive me if it shows!
As we all know, this is the school leavers’ party, and it’s time to say goodbye to everyone. We’re sorry to leave you at the end of our junior high school education, and we promise that we'll never forget the happy times we have spent in these buildings with you all.
I’d like to thank three groups of people for the three things I’ve learnt while I’ve been a pupil at our school. The three things are friendship, love and knowledge.
The first group is my friends, and what I’ve learnt is the importance of friendship. We’ve worked hard together, we’ve even shared some difficult times together, but we’ve also had a lot of fun. Many of us will go to new schools and we may not see each other so often in the future. Others will go on to senior high school and continue their close friendships. But friends don’t have to see each other all the time. Sometimes the friends you treasure most are the friends you see less often. A life without old friends is like a day without sunshine. We'll always stay in touch.
The second group is our parents and grandparents. We thank you for the love you have shown us during our years at junior high school, for making a home where we feel both safe and relaxed, and where we can prepare ourselves for our school days. We also thank you for your help with our homework. How many of us owe our good grades to the suggestions you have made during those long evenings?
And finally, the third group is our teachers. We can never pay you back for your kindness, your patience, and gift of knowledge which you have offered us; sometimes you’ve made us work very hard. But you have always been fair and you’ll always be our role models. There’s a saying from Ireland which is a favourite of mine: Strangers are only friends you haven’t met yet.
I couldn’t say it better myself. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all and wish you success for the future.

If you want to work more on writing, we suggest(建议)that you read throngh the passage below. That will help you learn how to improve your writing.

  Choosing a Writing Topic(题目,话题)

Your teacher and your group members may help you choose a topic sometimes. We suggest that you try if possible to choose or make up a topic that is interesting to you because it will be easier for you to write about something you are interested in.

  Getting Started

Once you have chosen a topic, you have to get started writing.Getting started is the hardest part of writing for most people. However, there are ways of making this job easier, and we would like to introduce you some of these techniques(技巧)at this time.

Brainstorming helps you get ideas for your writing. Here is how to do it.First, take a pen and piece of paper and write down your topic on it.Read your topic over a few times to yourself. Then let your mind go freely. And then write down any ideas that come to your mind. Now let’s suppose your topic is blue jeans. Please do as suggested.

  blue jeans youth/young people clothing

  freedom comfortable enjoyable

Listing is useful for exploring something where you are trying to look at two sides of a subject, the advantages(good points)and disadvantages(bad points)of something, reasons for doing and not doing something.

Another useful technique is mapping. You start by writing your topic in the center of your page in a box.And then as you brainstorm for ideas, you write your ideas around the topic. As you write one idea down, you may think of another idea related to(与……有关的)it, so you could write this second idea close to the first one.Mapping can be useful for helping you see relationship between ideas and also showing important events in relation to each other. Here are two examples of mapping.

Another way to get started and to explore your ideas on a topic is to do some free-writing at the beginning. You can do free-writing after or in place of brainstorming. You write for 10~15 minutes about your topic. You should write anything that comes into your mind.Keep on writing even if nothing comes into your mind. When you free-write, don’t think about grammar, spelling, or punctuation(标点).Just write! And don’t stop writing until your time is up.After you finish, read over what you have written.Draw a line under anything that seems interesting to you.You can free-write again beginning with the part you underlined. You can free-write several times. Each time you bring your ideas more and more closely to your topic.

Reading Comprehension
One day a teacher and his student lay down under a big tree near the big grass area. Then the student
suddenly asked the teacher, "Teacher, I wonder how I find my good friend. Can you please help me?"
Saying nothing for a few seconds, the teacher then answered, "Well, it's a pretty hard and an easy
question."
"Look that way. There is a lot of grass. Why don't you walk there? Please don't walk backwards,
just walk straight ahead. On your way, try to find a blade (叶片) of beautiful grass and pick it up and then
give it to me, but just one."
The student said, "Well, OK then…Wait for me…" and walked straight ahead to the grassy field.
A few minutes later the student came back.

"On my way, I found quite a few beautiful blade of grass, but I thought that I would find a better one,
so I didn't pick it. But I didn't know that I was at the end of the field, and I hadn't picked any because you
told me not to go back, so I didn't go back."
The teacher said, "That's what will happen in real life. Grass is the people around you, the beautiful
blade of grass is the people that attract you and the grassy field is time. In looking for your soul mate,
please don't always compare and hope that there will be a better one. By doing that, you'll waste your life
time. Please remember 'Time Never Goes Back'."
