Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, in 1918.He had an eventful life right from the beginning.While he was in high school, his father died, and he went to live with his cousin, David Dalindyebo.After he finished high school, he went to Fort Hare University College.In 1940, before he was able to graduate, Mandela was told to leave the college because he had taken part in a students strike.At about the same time, his family had chosen a girl for him to marry.Mandela wanted to choose his own wife, however, so he ran away from home and made his way to the city of Johannesburg.
Soon after Mandela moved to Johannesburg, he got a job as a policeman in a mine.Later, he be gan studying to be a lawyer.He also became involved in politics and joined the African National Congress, an organization that sought equality among all ethnic groups in South Africa.At the same time, he studied for two university degrees.Then, in 1952, he and his friend, Oliver Tambo, opened the first black law firm in the country.During the next twelve year, Mandela practised law, and was sent to prison several times for opposing the government's policy toward black South Africans.
Mandela's life changed completely in 1964 when a court found him guilty of trying to cause a revo-lution against the government.He was given“life imprisonment”.During the next twenty-six years, Mandela became the world's most famous political prisoner.Mandela was finally released on February 9, 1990.Four years later, in the country's first free election, Mandela became the first black person to be elected President of South Africa.

Johnny lived with his mother and father in a small town in the mountains
One day there was an earthquake near the town. Many houses were damaged(被损坏的). Everyone thought that there would soon be another earthquake.
They were worried that the second earthquake would be worse than the first.
“We must send Johnny to a safe place,” Johnny’s mother said to her husband. “Many of our friends are sending their children to relatives(亲戚) in other towns,’
“We’ll send him to my brother, Peter,” Johnny’s father said. “He lives a long way away. Johnny will be safe with him.’
He telephoned Johnny’s Uncle Peter and asked him if he would let Johnny live with him.
“He’s a good boy,” he said. “He won’t give you any trouble.’
“All right,’ Johnny’s Uncle Peter said, “but I’m not used to children. I live a very quiet and peaceful life.”
“You won’t know Johnny’s in the house,” his father told him.
So Johnny, who was five, went to live with his uncle.
Two days later, his mother and father received a telegram(电报)from Peter.
It said: “I am returning the child. Please send an earthquake.”

Computers can help many workers. They can also help thieves.
There was one thief who worked in a bank of the United States. He paid for everything he needed by check (支票). Then he told the computer not to take any money from his account for the checks he wrote. The bank’s computer did what he said. And it did not take any money from his bank account. One day the computer broke down. People had to do the computer’s work. They soon found out what was happening.
Another thief, who worked for a bank saw people filling in deposit forms (存款单). Many of these people did not know their account numbers, so they wrote only their names on the forms. They left empty places for their account numbers. The thief wrote his own account number in this place. When the computer read these forms it looked only at the account numbers. It did not look at the customers’ names. It paid the money on these deposit forms into the thief’s account .
Then there was the bank worker who told the bank computer to take ten cents off every customer’s account each month and put it into his own account. For a long time the bank’s customers did not notice that they were losing ten cents every month. But then someone did notice and told the bank. That was the end of that little game!
