There are many differences between British English and American English.I used to teach a course about the differences between the two.We speak English on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean but we have many differences in our common language. We have examples of the same words having very different meanings, differing spellings of the same words as well as completely different words for the same things. Here are some examples.

A cookie in the US is called a biscuit in the UK.A biscuit in the US is a small cake in the UK.Crisps in the UK,are known as chips, but we British people eat a plate of chips that you call fries in the US.In the UK,a pie can be made from either meat or fruit, while in the US pies are normally made from fruit;pot pies are made from meat. Most things are measured in grams and kilograms in the US,not pounds and ounces.

One very obvious (明显的) difference is the side of the road we each choose to drive on.Petrol in the UK is gas in the US.The place where we fill up our cars,in the UK,is a garage;while in the US,it’s a gas station. The term garage is also used as a place to store your car next to or close by your house. In the UK we call a lorry what is known as a truck in the US.

An elevator in the US is called a lift here, and the first floor in the US,is called the ground floor here,so many visitors get off on the wrong floor in British hotels.

I could continue with this. There are countless examples of differences within our one shared language. With so many differences,no wonder it’s hard to understand each other well.

As the developing of the economy(经济) and the population growing, a lack (缺乏) of energy(能量) becomes more and more serious. In the modern world, we can’t live without energy. But do you know where energy comes from?

Nearly all energy comes from the sun, either in a roundabout (不直接的) way or straight from it, in the form of heat rays(光线) and light rays. The light from the moon also comes from the sun. The moon can be said to be like a large mirror which throws back the sun’s light to the earth.

Electrical energy comes from the sun in a roundabout way. For example, it can come from the power of water falling down a mountain. The water falls there as rain, and we know that rain is made by the sun’s heat evaporating on the earth’s surface. This water steam rises, condenses (凝结) on cooling, and falls as rain. The light and heat energy from coal also comes from the sun in a roundabout way. Coal was made by the rocks pushing on trees and plants which died millions of years ago. Those trees and plants grew with the help of sunlight, changing the sun’s energy into chemical energy. When we burn coal, some of this energy is set free.

Energy which we use to drive cars comes from petrol, which was also made with the help of the sun in a roundabout way. Plants and animals which ate the plants, died millions of years ago, and the parts of them that were left were pushed under the rocks in the earth. These parts left from dead animals and plants made petroleum (原油), from which petrol and oil are now formed.

In this way, we can say that the sun is the place where nearly all energy comes from, and that without the sun’s heat and light, there could be no life on earth.

The oil resources which are left will not last very long. This means that all vehicles such as cars, trains,
buses, planes and ships that need oil to work will not be able to run. So it will be necessary to develop a new
method of transport which doesn't use oil. Electric vehicles are one possibility. In England, most families have
at least one car and this car is used every day. It could be that only one person in the family drives the car to
work or for shopping. The number of cars on the road perhaps helps to explain why the oil is used up so
quickly. The family car is a very useful form of transport but it is also a great waste of energy, especially if
it is compared with buses or trains which use less petrol per person than a car. A car traveling at 80 kilometers
an hour uses only half as much petrol as a car which is traveling at 120 kilometers an hour. Clearly, it would be better if there were fewer cars on the road and more speed limits so that the oil which is left will last as long
as possible.
About 25% of England's total consumption (消耗) of energy is domestic - it is used only in the home. Just
over 20% is used for transport. Most of the energy is used in industry. It is difficult to suggest any possible
energy conservation (保护) in industry because many of the suggestions would mean that some people
would lose their jobs. It is important that industry produces the same amount of products using the same
amount of workers.
Clearly, conservation is not going to be the answer to the energy problem. The most it can do is to give
more time for a better method to be found. The more time we have to develop new sources of energy, the
better it is because there is still a lot of work to be done in order to find suitable, safe methods of producing
energy.
1. What does the word "domestic" mean in paragraph two?
A. Producing energy.
B. Fast driving.
C. On the road.
D. For family use.
2. Why will all vehicles that need oil to work not be able to run?
A. Oil resources which are left will be used up soon.
B. A new system of transport will be developed.
C. They will be replaced by electric vehicles.
D. They waste a lot of energy.
3. Which is true according to the passage?
A. A car running at 80 km an hour uses more oil than 120 km an hour.
B. Family cars can save much more energy than buses and trains.
C. It is possible for English people to develop vehicles.
D. Fewer cars on the road will help the oil last longer.
4. Which of the suggestions is the best according to the passage?
A. Factories should produce less.
B. Vehicles mustn't go at a high speed.
C. New sources of energy should be found and developed.
D. We should cut down the number of family cars on the road.

My first impression of Britain is that people are much more formal. For example, in the States we use first names almost immediately but here I have to be more careful. And British people are generally more polite. A New Yorker says, “Give me the check, will you?” when he finishes a meal. But here in Britain they say, “Excuse me. Do you think you could give me the bill?”

I don’t find a lot of differences in prices. They’re about the same as in the States, I guess. It’s the same with accommodation (住所). I think it’s a bit cheaper in London than in New York but there’s not a lot of differences. One thing is certain, though, London is not as violent (暴力的) as New York. Some friends of mine who live in the Bronx have four locks on their doors! I also prefer the subway here. It’s cleaner and quieter, although the service isn’t as efficient. On the whole, though, London is more polluted than New York because everyone there has to use lead?free petrol (无铅汽油) but in Britain it’s not compulsory (强制的).

When it comes to work and business, my impression is that the British are much less hardworking than Americans. Sometimes I think the British don’t know what a day work means.

(1)

Does she have to spend more money to live in Britain than in the States?

(2)

Is Bronx in the States or in Britain?

(3)

How many aspects does she compare Britain with the States?

(4)

Why is London more polluted?

(5)

Is there any bad point about the subway in London?
