Henry was born in a village. His father has a small farm. He works hard, but the weather is bad. It doesn’t rain for a long time and they can’t get enough food. Sometimes their family are hungry. So the boy can’t go to school. He has to help his parents and work in the fields, too. His parents are very busy and have no time to teach him how to be polite(有礼貌的) boy.   Mrs.Thompson came to the 5th grade class and noticed that Teddy was always alone.Also, he did badly in his studies.When she reviewed Teddy’s past records, she find he was a good child at first, but he began to change when his mother got ill.Finally he lost interest in school after his mother’s death.

  Mrs.Thompson realized the problem and felt sorry for him.She felt even worse when her students brought her beautifully-covered Christmas presents.His presents were covered with some old paper.Some children laughed when she found a bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle with a little perfume(香水).But she said how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some perfume on her hand.Teddy stayed after school for a long time just to say, “Mrs.Thompson, today you smelled just like my mom used to.” After the child left, she cried for quite a long time.

     Monday of this week is Christmas'Day. Did you get some presents on this Christmas Day?
     A Christmas Day is the most important festival in Britain and some other countries. On Christmas Eve
(December 24th), people usually tell their children to put their stockings* at the end of their beds before
they go to sleep.
     Children believe Father Christmas will bring them Christmas presents. Actually, Father Christmas is
children’s father. He dresses up in a red coat and waits until children fall asleep. Then he goes into
children’s bedrooms, and puts small presents in their stockings. When childrenre no longer young, they
know who Father Christmas really is.
     Not only children but also their parents enjoy Christmas stockings. They also have stockings. Early
on the morning of Christmas Day, children wake their parents up say “Merry* Christmas”. Then they
help their parents open their stockings. Everybody likes presents. But it is better to give than to receive.
In France, everyone has a Christmas tree, sometimes decorated in the old way with red ribbons* and
white candles*. Trees in the garden are often decorated too, with lights on all night. Father Christmas is
called Pere Noel in France. The Christmas meal is an important chance for family to get together with
good meat and the best wine. Not everyone sends Christmas cards.
     In Germany, people love to decorate their houses with some beautiful small things at Christmas.
Father Christmas brings presents in the late afternoon of Christmas Eve, after people have been to a

ring a bell and call everyone to come to the room. On Christmas Day, some delicious food will be
cooked.
