In a book called Magnificent Obsession, by Lloyd C. Douglas, a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worried a person, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solution without the person knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problem secretly, to the great delight of the worried person. The helpers would stand by privately, content with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere “thank you”, because they were never known.
This idea is popular today but in a different way. The phrase “pay it forward” is now used when one person helps another. However, the person helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them. So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in the future, which means they pay it forward. It is a sense of responsibility(责任) which makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us. But, in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future.
Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much. Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education.
You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money, but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it.
People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can’t afford their medicine or a doctor’s care. Consider how you can “pay it forward” rather than pay money back to your grandmother.

阅读短文,完成下面句子,每空一词。
In the 21st century classroom, modern technology has made our learning experience more interesting. Also, it’s more interactive(互动的).
Now three kinds of tools in the 21st century classroom---a whiteboard, a computer screen and some audio tools(音频工具) are available. They have made a big difference in how students learn. An interactive whiteboard allows the teacher to show pictures and provide sound as well. A large computer screen has colorful pictures and sound in it. So lots of students’ attention is attracted by what they see and hear. Different kinds of audio tools, such as earphones and microphone, also help to make sure that everyone can hear the teacher. In the past, if a child missed some of what the teacher said, the child may have been too nervous to ask the teacher to repeat it. Now the students are not likely to miss what the teacher says with these audio tools.
The 21st century classroom is able to teach students more than one thing. Just imagine an English lesson is given in a modern classroom like this. How would it be different from a classroom in the past? The answer is simple. The students would learn about not only the subject itself but also how to use the modern machines.
The 21st century classroom can make teaching and learning easier. Now everyone is able to express their opinions or answer questions without having to speak loud. Since everyone can do it, the teacher can easily see who needs more help in other ways.
It’s clear that the 21st century classroom is really making a great difference.

I ran to my grandmother’s house, for she always told the truth. Grandma was at home. I told __11___ everything. “No Father Christmas?” she was a little ___12____. “Don’t believe it. Put on your coat, and let’s go.”

  “Go? Where, Grandma?” I asked.

  “Kerby’s Store.”

Grandma told me Father Christmas never let people know that he ___22___ them. Then she drove me over to Bobbie’s house, telling that I was helping Father Christmas ____23___ the presents.

Grandma parked the car along the street, and we hid behind the trees near Bobbie’s house. Then Grandma said to me, “All right, Father Christmas, get going.”

I took a deep breath, rushed to his front door, put the present down. ____24___ the door, rang the doorbell and flew back to the safety of the ____25_____ and Grandma. We waited breathlessly in the dark for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobbie.

Your daughter has finally reached the age of 18, and you think perhaps your job will finally get a little easier. That could be wrong thinking - as the parent of any 18-year-old will tell you.  Learning to cope with an ungrateful 18-year-old daughter takes patience, understanding and time.

_______ When she was a little girl, she wanted you to be involved(参和) in everything of her life from her daily activities to her friends. This is' no longer the case. She's a grown woman who needs her own personal life. Comment(评论) on her choices only when asked to do so - especially if you want to say no to her.

Allow her to make mistakes. No parent wants to see his or her child fall, but the days of protecting her all the time are at an end. Unless(除非) you see a train coming, let her fall when she makes poor choices. It will enable her to grow past the ungrateful "know it all" stage.

Encourage dialogue whenever you can, rather than planning talks. She's more likely to open up to you when talking over something trivial (琐碎的). Anytime she wants to talk, become a willing listener in the conversation. You never know when a deeper, more important conversation will develop.

In every country, there are thousands of people who want to help out. Many join organizations run (管理) by their governments, for example, the Peace Corps in the United States and Voluntary Service Overseas in Britain. Since the powerful (猛烈的) earthquake took place in Sichuan, more than 200 thousand volunteers across China have been helping there! They do all kinds of work or come up with ways to help improve life. Some offer their professional skills for free. Others have no qualifications (资历), but they love to work hard to help.
One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best volunteer because she gave her life to helping the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became the mother of those without families.
Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.
All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the blind, fix up broken homes, find ways to get water for villages. Could you be a volunteer? What kind of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.
