One of my friends has a large German shepherd (牧羊犬) named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a long walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much.
One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed a long time, and he talked and talked. Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn't leave.Jack became very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down directly (径直地) in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He continued talking. Finally, Jack couldn't stand (容忍) it any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. Some people have very good memories (记忆力), and can easily learn quite long poems (诗) by hearts. There are other people who can only remember things when they have said them over and over.
Charles Dickens, the famous English author, said that he could walk down any long street in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many great men of the world have had wonderful memories.
A good memory is a good help in learning a language. Everybody knows his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child. Some children - like boys and girls who live in foreign countries with their parents - seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In schools, it is not easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects as well.
The human mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photographs not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo graph is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way there is much work to be done before we can make a picture remain for ever in the mind.
Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.
