On the morning of 4th July,1952,the sea was as cold as ice. When Florence looked forward, she saw nothing but thick fog(雾).She was very tired. She had been swimming for 16 hours. Her goal was to become the first woman to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast.

Her mother and trainer encouraged her. They told her it wasn't much farther. But all she could see was fog. They asked her not to stop. She tried hard, but at last she gave up only half a mile away from the coast.

Later, she told a reporter,“Look,I'm not excusing myself, but if I had seen land,I might have made it.” It was not her tiredness or even the cold water that defeated her.It was the fog.She couldn't see her goal.

Two months later, she tried again. This time, though there was still fog; she swam with her goal in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind the fog was land. This time she succeeded!

Hi Eric,
We don’t have smog in Oxford. We get fog sometimes, but that’s all. Oxford is much smaller than LA. We only have about 135,000 people. I looked up the 1900 population, it was about 57,000. So it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like LA! Oxford is much smaller than London - London has about 7,000,000 people. So that means that LA has more people than London. LA gets hotter than Oxford. We have colder winters too – it can be -4°C in winter.
I’m not surprised that your new student only knew about the university. It is famous because it is one of the oldest universities in the country. There are about 18,000 students. The brother of my best friend is at Aberystwyth University, in Wales. There the population is 14,000 and half of that are students! It must be a strange place to live! There are more tourists in Oxford than students, I should think. We get a lot of tourists, all year round. We also get a lot of young foreign students because there are a lot of language schools here. You can stand in the middle of Oxford, close your eyes, and hear accents from all over the world!
  Your e-mail friend, Ben

When I was lost in London, it had one of the thickest fog(雾)in years. You could hardly see your hand in front of your face. Cars and buses ran very slowly with their lights on, and their horns(喇叭)made a terrible noise. When evening fell,it got even worse. All traffic(交通)came to a stop. Since I had an important meeting on the other side of town, I decided to walk.

Minutes later I was lost. Then I heard a young woman's voice coming out of the fog. I think you are lost. Can I help you? I couldn't see her clearly, but I was very glad to find another person out in the fog. I explained where I wanted to go and she said she knew very well how to get there.

As I followed her through the dark streets, I wondered how she found her way without difficulty. I know this part of London quite well, she answered. But in such a fog it's difficult to see anything. I said.

“With the fog or without the fog, it makes no difference(区别,不同)to me. You see,I'm blind, she answered.
