    One of the most popular American singers of 20th century was Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley made the music called rock ‘n’ roll popular around the world. He sold millions of records and made many successful films, and he helped change the direction of popular music in the 1960’s. Elvis Presley was born in 1935 in a small town called tupelo, in Mississippi in the southern United States; he came from a very poor family. His parents were simply country people who often took Elvis to church. At church he learned to sing, and he never forgets the kind of songs that he used to sing in church as a child.

    When he was a school boy, Elvis moved to the town of Memphis in Tennessee (田纳西州). He attended high school in Memphis, but he was not a very good student. His only real interest was singing. He began to sing in the style that is popular in Tennessee, a style called country and western.

    In 1955 in Memphis he recorded some country and western songs for his mother’s birthday, the people at the recording studio liked Elvis’s singing and music. There was something different about it. It was country and western music, but it also sounded a little like the music which black people used to sing in the American south, music known as blues.

    We all, at one time or another , were like a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favourite song. Most of us have done this in our own room when we were kids or even when we grew up. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a song that I can sing along, and soon my arms are in the air. I am moving along to the music. Most of the time, I do this on my way to work.
    Yes, that is true. I will be in my nice work clothes in my car. Someone may look at me strangely or even laugh at me when I stopped at a traffic light. Personally I love to get lost in the music. That can lead me to share with you the importance of being silly!
    The meaning of the word silly, according to the dictionary is : stupid, foolish and nonsensical. I know many people do not want to look foolish. So they are always serious in their life, but in fact that is really stupid.
    No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfect. I don’t care how educated, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal(朴素的), how rich, and so on … No one is perfect! So why pretend(假装) to be something you are not?  
    Life is so short…_________, so why waste a single second on being so “perfect”?
    When we were kids, we had no idea of fear and we had no care in the world so we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to others. However, as we grew up, we lost that kind of feeling.

    　　Every country has its heroes．The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire．If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential(潜力)of that nation．

    　　Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups．The first group of heroes would be the rock stars the people connected with rock music．There is no doubt that such people do have talent(天才)but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model．The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good．The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles．However, one should seek(寻觅)more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes．
