  The train would start off on time. Just then an old man rushed on to it. He began to look for a seat, but could not find one. After some time, he saw an empty seat near a young man. He found that there was a bag beside him on the seat. He asked the young man if the seat had been taken. “Yes,” the young man said. “My friend had just gone out. He'll be back,” in a minute.” “I’ll leave as soon as your friend comes back,” the old man said. Then he sat down by the young man.

       I was not quite seventeen when I decided to join the US Army. My mother tried her best to    1    
me out of my dream, then finally signed the papers that would allow me to be a solider.
      One day, nearly two years after the Philippines (菲律宾) became my     2   , I was told to go to the
