  Mother's Day is a holiday for mothers.It's celebrated(庆祝) in the United States,England,Sweden(瑞典) ,India,Mexico(墨西哥) and some other countries.Little by little,it becomes widely celebrated.Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May.On that day,many people send presents of love to their mothers.Those whose mothers are still living often wear a pink or red rose or carnation(康乃馨),while those whose mothers are dead wear a white one.

  The idea of a day for mothers was first given by Miss Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia(费城).As a result of(由于) her hard work,the celebration of the first American Mother's Day was held(举行) in Philadelphia on May 10,1908.Soon the holiday become popular throughout the country and around the world.

  In China,people do the same on this special(特别的) day for mothers.And in some cities,people sometimes ask a song to be broadcasted(广播) for his or her mother only.

  Sam was a fifteen-year-old boy living with his littie sister,Julie.Their parents had passed away long ago.Sam had taken care of Julie by himself.

  One day,Sam woke up at three in the morning as usual.When Julie was sleeping alone,Sam left their lit.tle house to send newspapers.When he found an old man sitting in front of their house,Sam was so surprised that he stopped to look at him closely.It was an icy morning and he looked very cold.

  The poor old man didn't have anything to cover himself with.Sam went into his house to get the old man a blanket(毯子).However,there were no extra blankets,so Sam thought hard and took his father's coat.It was the only thing of his father's that he had left.Sam wrote a short note.“Sir,I found you sleeping in front of my house.This is my father's coat.I hope it fits you well.”He put the note in a pocket of the coat,and covered the old man with the coat.Then he went to work.When he came back three hours later,both the man and the coat were gone.Sam thought that it was the best thing he could have done with his father's coat.

  That afternoon,Sam hurried home after school because Julie was at home alone.However,Julie and the old man were standing in front of the house,and Julie shouted to Sam,“Brother!He's our grandfather!”

  The grandfather smiled and said,“Sam.Thank you for giving me the coat and letting me know how good my grandson is.This coat was the one that I gave my son a long time ago!”

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand. Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong (终身的)feelings, extending (延伸) deeply into both families.
There is another difficult point for us to understand. Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take a day off from our work to act as guides to our friends: It is opposite in America, Americans can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. So accept their hospitality (好客) at home and enjoy your visit in America!
