Are you left-handed? If you are, you make up just 10% of the world’s population.小题1:  Most people write and play musical instruments with their right hands.
Why are so few people left-handed? A new theory, called “cooperation (合作) vs competition” may have the answer.小题2:    When making tools for a right-handed person — like a knife — it was easier if everybody could use the same hand. But some humans wanted to compete instead. So to have an advantage over right-handed people, they would use their left hand to surprise competitors.
小题3:German born American scientist Albert Einstein, British physicist Isaac Newton and British biologist Charles Darwin are some famous “lefties”. At least six US presidents were left-handed, including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Harry Truman.
“Lefties” are also often linked with creativity and visual (视觉) skills.
How can this be? Well, the left side of our brain is where we solve problems. The right side of our brain is where we develop creativity. Right-handers tend (倾向) to use the left side more than the right side.小题4:
“This is why there are more of them in creative areas, such as music, art and writing,” said Alan Searleman, PhD, from St. Lawrence University, New York.
小题5:They tend to have worse memories, often forgetting names and places.

There is an old saying that all of us are born with two bags hung on our necks. A small bag in front of our chest is filled up with other people's faults (缺点), while the big one at the back is full of our own shortcomings (短处).

So it’s easy to find other people's faults, but it's hard for us to see our faults behind us.

There was a boy, Tommy, who always opened the front bag to check what was in it. He saw other people's faults very quickly. When Simon was impatient with him, he said to Simon, "It's so easy for you to get angry. It is hard to be friends with you."

He told his mother about Jack's dishonesty. "Jack takes my things without asking. He also forgets to return them." Tommy himself did not like sharing his things with anyone.

When Johnny was too tired to play with him, he said, "'You are such a rude person."

He thought Harry was too proud of his rich parents. But Tommy was as proud of himself because he could not see any of his own shortcomings! He could not understand why he did not get on well with others.

If only Tommy would switch the bags around, he would discover his own impatience, dishonesty, bad manners and vanity (虚荣), which were no better than that of Simon, Jack, Johnny or Harry.

Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures. J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book was refused 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, "I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed."

These people succeeded because they understood that you have to let your failures teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time. So if you get into trouble, that doesn't mean you're a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to act right. If you get a bad grade, that doesn't mean you're stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying. No one's born being good at all things, You become good at things through hard work. You don't hit every note the first time you sing a song. You've got to practice.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and that then allows you to learn something new. So find an adult that you trust - a parent, a grandparent or a teacher - and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.

Now, your families, your teachers, and I are doing everything we can to make sure you have a good education. But you've got to do your part, too. So I expect all of you to get serious this year. I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don't let us down. Don't let your family down or your country down. Most of all, don't let yourself down. Make us all proud.
