　　People know the danger of fires．It’s good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire．Here are some suggestions：

　　Put a smoke alarm in the house．Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off．The alarm makes a loud sound．The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once．

　　Make escape(逃脱)plans．They should know all the ways out of the house．If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out．Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily．

　　Buy fire extinguishers(灭火器)in the house．Everyone in the family should know how to use them．

　　Practice for a fire．They do fire practice because they teach children about fire safety．Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules：

　　＊Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door．

　　＊Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire; the best air is near the floor because smoke rises．

　　＊What will you do if you hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don’t run! The fire burns faster because of more air．Drop! Fall to the floor．They roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out．Put a blanket(毯子)around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you．

　　There are many possible causes for firs．A wise family is ready all the time．If there is a fire, don’t forget to call 119 for help．

　　There was an old pear tree in a man’s garden．In the past，the tree fruited every year，so the man would get many pears．But now，the tree got old．There were no more pears for the man．So the ungrateful(忘恩负义的)man decided to cut the tree down．When he walked to the tree with an axe(斧子)in his hand，the tree said to him，“Please don’t cut me down．I have brought so many pears for you in the past years．Now I only have a short time to live．”

　　“I’m sorry．I have to do so，”the man said，“because I need something to make a chair.”Then he began to wave his axe．At that moment，a bird in the old tree said to him，“Don’t cut it down！Every time you go out and your wife feels lonely，she will come out to the garden and sit under the tree to enjoy its cool shade(树阴)，and I sing songs to make her happy．We give much pleasure to your wife when you are away from home．”

　　The man didn’t listen to the bird and drove it away．When he was about to cut the tree，some bees flew out of it and said，“Listen！If you agree not to kill this tree，we will give you delicious honey every day．Would you please leave the tree with us？”

　　The man got moved(感动)．He said，“You are so kind to the tree，although it has become old．Now I see that I shouldn’t cut it down．It has done so much to me and my wife．Let the tree stay here，and let the bird continue to sing songs here．”With these words，the man left．And the old tree lived there to its last day．

　　It is said that another acre(英亩)of the world's forest will be destroyed forever．Why is this happening? There are two reasons－land and wood．In many countries the trees have been cut down because the land was needed for animals or crops．In other parts of the world the trees are cut down because their wood is wanted．This wood is used by local people for firewood or it is used for building．But many people don't know that in most places the trees won't be replaced．The soil in the forests is very thin, but it is protected by the trees．When the trees are cut down, the soil is washed away by the rain or blown away by the wind．Soon nothing can be grown on it．The forest becomes a desert．Then more land will be needed, and more trees will be cut down．

　　When the forest is destroyed, it isn't only the trees that are lost－the homes of millions of animals and plants are destroyed, too．All kinds of animals are in danger －fish，reptiles, birds, mammals, insects, and shellfish－as well as thousands of plants．

　　Who is to blame for this? The answer is simple：all of us．There are just too many people in the world．The world's population is now six billion．Of course, it's very easy to blame the local people．We don't cut down trees．They do．But the products are bought by people like you and me－wood houses, beds, tables, chairs, paper… Why are the forests being destroyed? Just look around．You are probably using it right now．
