My days usually begin at 4∶30 a. m., when I wake up to exercise. Then I spend three hours in college, five at work, and I go back to school from six to nine in the evening.

When I get home at ten.I do my homework after a quick dinner. My day finally ends at 12∶30 or 1 a. m. the next day.In a few hours the alarm clock will wake me up and it'll all start over again.

“Why are you doing all this?”my friends asked when I told them about my bumblebee(大黄蜂)schedule.“It is because of my dreams,”I answered. When I was young, I wanted to do better than common people.I always wanted to have people say“I wish I were in his shoes.”I'd read about famous people's lives. They were all busy people who had dreams and worked hard towards their goals.

I complain about being too busy and wish I had more time, but the truth is even when I have a day off from school and work-I find myself studying or reading.I live by an old southern motto:“The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but your grass can be just as green as that if you water it.”

When I was at university,I studied very hard. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams.Others didn’t do quite enough.Fred Baines was one of them.He spent more time drinking in the Students’ Union than working in the library.

Once at the end of the term,we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. In my room the night before the test,Fred was watching TV.Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan.“It’s very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test.I’ll take a coin into the examination room.I haven’t studied a chemistry book for months,so I’ll just toss the coin. That way,I’m sure I’ll get half the questions right.”

The next day,Fred came happily into the exam room.As he sat tossing a coin for half an hour he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.

The next day,he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor.“Oh,good,”he said,“Have you got the result of the test?”The professor looked at him and smiled,“Ah,it’s you,Baines.Just a minute.”Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin.He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.

One evening last July, my old car broke down on a highway. It was an hour before sunset, and.I was 25 miles from home.I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus.

After a while, a bus pulled up and I asked the driver how far she was going.“Four more lights,”she said. She dropped me off at the end of her routes and told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up and the door opened.

  “I just can't leave you here,”she said.“I'll give you a ride home.”

“You'll drive me home in the bus?”I asked, confused.

“No, I'll take you in my car,”she said.

  “It's a long way,”I answered.

“Come on, sir,”she said.“I have nothing else to do.”

On the way, she told me a story.A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas.A good Chinese man had picked him up, taken him to a gas station and then back to his car.“I'm just passing the favor along,”she said.

  When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn't accept(接受)it.“That wouldn't make it a favor,”she said.“Just do something nice for somebody.”Pass it along.
