Most animals are helped by people. They can’t live without us. But sometimes people have made the environment worse. For example, in some parts of the world the forests are being cut down.
The animals in the forests have become fewer and fewer. People hope to grow more food on the land, but the wind blows the earth away. Now forests become smaller and smaller, the soil becomes poorer and poorer. Now there are fewer animals and plants in the world. Insects (昆虫) are usually killed, but some plants need insects. Their seeds (种子) can’t spread without them. Birds eat insects, and without insects many kinds of birds will die.
There are hundreds and hundreds of plants and animals, and each plant is helped by another, so does each animal. If you hurt one, you will hurt another, then another. Scientists know this well. They don’t want people to break their environment.
1.It isn’t good for our environment to cut down forests.
2.Animals in the world are becoming fewer and fewer.
3.Animals and plants helped by each other.
4.After the wind blows, the earth becomes richer and richer.
5.This article tells us it is important to make our environment worse and worse.
In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were not many people on earth, and natural resources seemed to be unlimited.
Today, things are different. The world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue like this, human life on earth will not survive (继续生存).
Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful machines to cut down more and more trees.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. However, in most countries waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this.
We know, too, that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there will not be enough food.
What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept.
The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.

Look carefully at the back of a California state quarter. A man with a walking stick is pictured there. A bird called a California condor(大秃鹫)is flying overhead. Who is this man, and why is he so important that he is featured(处于显著地位)on the back of a coin?
The man on this quarter is John Muir. Even as a child, Muir loved watching nature. As a young man, he spent much of his life exploring the beauty of the wilderness. He walked more than a thousand miles across the country, through fields and woods. John Muir liked writing about the places he visited, describing their beauty.
Muir also wrote about problems. In order to create more farmland for sheep and cattle, many trees were being cut down. This made Muir unhappy and worried, because he knew that trees were important to forests and to the animals that lived in them.Muir believed that nature should be conserved(保护)instead of being changed by human beings. He wrote articles in magazines and newspapers to spread the word about conserving forests. Soon, others began to listen.
Muir wrote letters to important people, such as President Theodore Roosevelt. The president admired Muir’s love for nature. When Roosevelt came to visit Muir in California. Muir convinced(说服)the president to go camping with him for three nights under the trees so they could talk about conservation. Later, President Roosevelt set aside 148 million acres of land for national forests and established(建立)five national parks. National parks are large areas of land that are protected from development. This means that people cannot build homes or businesses there. One of these parks is Yosemite National Park, the area that is featured on the back of the California quarter.
Though it has been almost one hundred years since John Muir died, people continue his work today. His work as a conservationist helped us to see the beauty of our natural world. John Muir made us understand the importance of protecting our earth and our resources---then, now, and for the future.

When they saw how deep the hole was, they cried to the two frogs,“We can’t save you.”The two frogs didn’t care and tried their best to jump up out of the hole. The other frogs kept saying that they were sure to die. Finally, one of the two frogs gave up, because he heard what the others were saying. Then he fell down and died. The other one, however, continued to jump as hard as he could, and at last he succeeded. When he got out, the other frogs asked, “Didn’t you hear us?” The frog, who had a poor hearing, explained, “I thought you were encouraging me all the time.”
