题目列表(包括答案和解析)

Usually, when your teacher asks a question, there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of current answers. That question is "What's your name?" Everyone gives a different answer, but everyone is correct.
Have you ever wondered about people's names? Where do they come from? What do they
mean?
People's first names, or given names, are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents choose the name of a well-known person. A boy could be named George Washington Smith; a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.
Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means "bright"; Beatrice means "one who gives happiness"; Donald means "world ruler"; Leonard means "as brave as a lion".
The earliest last names, or surnames, were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near brook (С?); someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.
Other early surnames came from people's occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter - a person who owned or drove a cart(手推车); Potter -a person who made pots and pans.
The ancestors (祖先) of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter's great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.
Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John was very tall could call himself John
Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast
runner or a good dancer.
Some family names were made by adding something to the father's name. English-speaking people added -s or -son. The Johnsons are descendants of John; the Roberts family's ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O'Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.
【小题1】Which of the following aspects(方面)do the surnames in the passage NOT cover?

English names and Chinese names are quite different in some 1 ways, but it’s not hard for us to know.

Unlike Chinese, most English people have 2 names. One is their family name, both of the other names are given names.Their family name is 3 the given name. They use Mr, Mrs or Miss with the 4 name, but they never use 5 first name. For example, we can 6 a man named James Allan Green Mr Green, 7 we can’t call him Mr James or Mr Allan.People usually use Jim 8 James.Jim is short for James because it’s 9 to remember.

But Chinese names are the opposite.A girl with the name Han Limei 10 her family name Han first.Of course, she can be called Ah Mei for short in China if you wish.

It's very interesting to study names of different countries.Chinese names are different 1 foreign names.Once an English lady came to 2 me.When I was introduced to her, she said,“Glad to meet you, Miss Ping.”Then she gave me her name card with three words on it:“Betty J.Black.”So I said“Thank you, Miss Betty.”We looked at each other and laughed heartily(会意地).Later I found that the English people 3 their family names last and the given name 4 , while their middle names are 5 used very much.I explained to her that the Chinese family name 6 first, the given name last, so she would 7 call me Miss Ping. She asked if we Chinese had a middle name.I told her we didn't. 8 people may often find three words on a Chinese name card.In this case the family name still comes first, the other words after it 9 a two-word given name.It is quite usual in China. My sister is Li Xiaofang. She has two words in her given name instead of just one 10 mine.

Most English people have three names: a first name, a middle name and the 1 name. 2 family name comes last. For example, my full name is Jim Allan Green. Green is my family name. My parents gave me 3 of my other names. In England people 4 use Mr. Mrs. and Miss before their first names. They 5 Mr. Mrs. or Miss with the family name, but never with the first name. It's different 6 the Chinese names. In China, the 7 name is the family name and the last name is the 8 name. For example, a man 9 Zhou Jian puts his family name Zhou 10 . In England, people often call me Jim 11 short. That's because it's shorter and 12 than James.
