    Do you know star anise? It has a Chinese name “bajiao”(八角). You can find this spice(调味料) in almost all Chinese kitchens. Suddenly people around the world need the small fruit from which the spice is made, because of bird flu(禽流感).

    Bird flu has made tens of millions of birds die and killed at least 60 people in Asia. Scientists say if flu changes to spread from person to person, it could kill millions!
    A medicine called Tamiflu(达菲) is supposed to fight bird flu in humans. Roche, a Swiss company, developed it. But Roche says it hasn’t enough raw material(原料) to make lots of Tamiflu. The material is the Chinese spice star anise.
    About 90% of the world’s star anise is produced in South China. The fruit is harvested(丰收) between March and May. Besides spice, people also use it as medicine.
    People afraid of bird flu have begun to buy star anise and cook chicken and other meat with it more. But so far, no scientists say the spice could give protection(保护). Some scientists say that eating the fruit itself won’t help against bird flu.

        There has not been a worldwide spread (传播) of flu (流行性感冒) since 1968. Experts say there should
    have been another by now.
        The so-called Spanish flu in 1918 became the most deadly flu ever recorded. It killed an estimated twenty
    million to fifty million people. Almost half were young adults.
        There were two other widespread flu in the twentieth century. The Asian flu struck in 1957, and the Hong
    Kong flu in 1968. 
         Scientists at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the cause of the widespread
    Spanish flu is not clear. But the two others are known to have resulted from a human virus that became mixed
    with a bird flu virus. And that could happen again.
         Scientists first identified bird flu in Italy more than one hundred years ago. Bird flu is caused by type A flu
    viruses. Type A are the most common, and usually cause the most serious flu spread in people. Currently the
    most serious kind of bird flu is known as h-five-n-one. It has spread among chickens and ducks in Asia.

    I think Bird Flu is very bad. Many chickens, ducks and birds in our country got the disease. Some of them died, but some birds flew away and they might carry germs(细菌) to other places. This is a serious problem. We must do something to solve it. Let me tell you what people have to do to keep away from the disease.
    * Do morning exercises every day.
    * Open the windows in the morning.
    * Wash hands very often.
    * Eat more vegetables and less meat.
    * Go to bed early.

    sick. It will be a few months before we have good medicine for bird flu.
        But that doesn't mean you can't do anything to prevent it now.
