    Thomas Edison was g great American scientist. He was born in Ohio(俄亥俄州)in 1847.

    When he was at school, he asked his teachers a lot of questions.Some of his questions were easy, others were difficult. And he did   not stop doing so. His teachers often said he was not a good student.They did not like him and they did not want to answer any more   questions. So Edison had to leave school after only three months.

    After this, Edison's mother taught him at home. The boy was soon reading all kinds of books.

    When he was about ten, he was already doing science work. He planted tomatoes and other things. So he got some money to buy the   needed things for his work.

    When he was twelve, he began to work on the train. He tried his best to read a lot of science books when he was free. He taught   himself maths, physics and other subjects. He studied all the time.

  Thomas Edison made more than 1,000 inventions in his life. Many of his inventions have changed the world His first invention was a rote recorder in 186(9) This machine allowed people to place a vote by pressing a button instead of saying yes or no. However, American government officials(政府官员)did not like Edison's invention because they liked to call out their votes. Edison learned a lesson: he told himself never again to invent something people did not want.

  Edison started a company with his friend, Franklin Pope, to make fire and burglar alarms to use with the telegraph. At this company, Edison was busy from early morning until late at night. He often said, There is no substitute(替代物)for hard work. He invented a telegraph to print the price of gold and silver. He sold it to the Western Union Company for 15,000 US dollars.

  With some of this money Edison started his own company. He next invented a stock ticker. This was a machine that recorded the price of stocks in New York. Western Union paid Edison 40,000 dollars for this invention.

  Edison used this money to open a shop in the state of New Jersey. There he met a young woman, Mary Stilwell. Edison and Mary got married on Christmas Day 187(1) They had three children. In 1875, with his wife and young family, Edison moved to Menlo Park in the same state. There he built his own laboratory. In the laboratory were tables, science books, instruments and bottles of chemicals.

  His first success at Menlo Park was an improvement on the telephone that had just been invented by Alexander Graham Bell.
