    Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway should pay me back￡12, so you owe me the money,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man who was working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me ￡12.”

He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her, “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
    “Yes,” she answered, shyly, “The beach was lovely. And I can swim, too!”
    “That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three…”
    “I’m four,” the child said proudly, “I’ll be four and a half.”
    Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said, “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”
    “Er, well…”woman looked at the child, “I mean… she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”
    “A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs…let me see…￡13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe￡1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine…”

    　　It was a cold wet night. The taxi driver hadn't had one passenger(乘客)all day. When he went by the railway station, he saw a young man from the country coming out, carrying two big bags. “Aha! ”thought the taxi driver, “here's the right person to make good this bad day. ”He quickly stopped the taxi and opened the door.

    　　Driver: Where do you want to go, sir?

    　　Young Man: To the Park Hotel.

    　　When the taxi driver heard that, his hopes of getting a lot of money disappeared. The Park Hotel was hardly two kilometers away. The young man would give him fifty cents at most. Only fifty cents ! Then he had an idea of taking the young man by a longer route----going all around the city and then back to the Park Hotel. This he did, and after a long time the taxi finally arrived at the hotel.

    　　Driver: You should pay me fifteen dollars ,sir.

    　　Young Man: What? Fifteen dollars? Do you think I'm a fool? You're trying to cheat(骗)me.

    　　Driver: How dare you say I…

    　　Young Man: You must think I don't know my way around.

    　　Driver: But…
