题目列表(包括答案和解析)

One day, a young man was taking a walk with a professor. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They thought it belonged to a poor man who worked in a field nearby. The student said to the professor, “Let us play the man a joke: we will take away his shoes, and conceal ourselves behind those trees and wait to see what will happen when he cannot find them. That must be very interesting.”

“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we should never make ourselves happy at the cost of the poor. But you can put a coin into each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how the discovery(发现)changes him.”

  The student did so.

The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path. While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, he felt something hard. He found the coin. Surprise was seen on his face. He found the coin and looked at it again and again. He then looked around, but there was no person. He now put the money into his pocket. When he put on the other shoe, he was surprised again to find the other coin. He fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and said aloud some thanksgiving words about his family.

I have forgotten the name of the old lady, who was a customer(顾客) on my newspaper route when I was twelve. Yet she taught me a lesson that I shall never forget.

On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the roof of the old lady’s house near her garden. I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped(滑) from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window on the lady’s door. At the sound of broken glass, we knew we were in trouble. We ran faster than any of our stones flew off her roof.

I was too scared about getting caught that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken window in winter. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her trouble. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the newspaper, but I was no longer able to act comfortably when seeing her.

I decided that I would save my paper delivery(送) money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope (信封) with a note saying that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost of repairing it.

The next day, I handed the old lady her paper. She thanked me for the paper and gave me a bag of biscuits she had made herself. I thanked her and ate the biscuits as I continued my route.

After several biscuits, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was shocked. Inside were the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you.”

21. What do the underlined words “be concerned about” mean?

A. wait for B. worry about C. argue with D. look after

22. Of the following people, who has similar qualities to the writer that paid for the broken window?

A. Alice, who used to spend most of her pocket money on snacks, now saves money and donates it to help the elderly.

B. Tom, who used to be shy, kept practising speaking in front of his classmates and has become confident.

C. Ann, who was weak in maths, now often asks her friends for help and has made much progress.

D. Millie, who had stolen her aunt’s necklace, realized her mistake and returned it to her aunt.

23. What can we infer(推断)from the story?

A. The old lady was such a rich woman that she didn’t care about the money.

B. The old lady forgave the boy for what he had done and returned him the money.

C. The old lady was too proud to accept the money the boy paid for the broken window.

D. The old lady didn’t forgive the boy for what he had done though he said sorry to her.

Studies have shown it takes a doctor about 18 seconds to stop a patient after he begins talking.
It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see. I came close to her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway.
She was an older woman, sitting at the edge of the bed, trying to put socks on her swollen(肿大的) feet. I
spoke quickly to the nurse, saw her chart saying she was in stable(稳定的) condition. I was almost in the
clear.
She asked if I could help put on her socks. Instead, I began a long speech that went something like this:
" How are you feeling? Your blood sugar and blood pressure (血压)were high but they're better today. The
nurse said you can't wait to see your son who's visiting you today. It's nice to have a family visit from far
away. I'm sure you really look forward to seeing him. "
She stopped me with a serious voice. " Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story. "
I was surprised and ashamed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only
son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the pressure of
this caused greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there
was anything else I could do for her. She shook her head and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.
Listening to someone's story costs less than expensive diagnostic(诊断的) testing but is key to healing
(痊愈).
I often thought of what that woman taught me the importance of stopping, sitting down and truly listening.
And, not long after, unexpectedly, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of sclerosis(硬化症) at age 31. Now,
20 years later, I sit all the time in a wheelchair.
For as long as I could, I continued to see patients from my chair, but I had to give up my job when my
hands were influenced. I still teach medical students and other health care professionals, but now from the view
of doctor and patient.
I tell them I believe in the power( 力量) of listening. I tell them I know firsthand that huge healing takes place within me when someone stops, sits down and listens to my story.
1. What does"I was almost in the clear" mean?
A. I thought everything was clear.
B. I was about to finish my work.
C. I almost made myself understood.
D. I was very quickly out of her sight.
2. From the 4th paragraph, we can infer the woman ___from the way she said.
A. showed her anger and impatience
B. refused to listen to the doctor

3. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Listening-a Powerful Medicine
