     A giant (巨人) lived in a great castle (城堡). Each of its hundred doors was guarded by a huge dog.
The giant hated the King because the King was richer than him. One day, he carried off Prince Conor,
the King's son, and locked (锁) him in a tower.
     The Prince could not escape( 逃脱) from the high tower. The King and his men were too afraid to
go near the castle to help him. One morning, the Prince saw a little white cat standing just outside his
window. He told the cat his sad story.
     Quickly, the cat ran away and told Princess Diana about the Prince in the high tower. Diana
promised to help the Prince. Before she left, she made a hundred magic cakes and made a magic net.
     When the Princess reached the giant's castle, she fed the dogs the magic cakes. Each dog fell asleep
when they ate the cakes.
     Quietly, she entered the castle and went up the stairs of tower. But the giant heard her footsteps and
came rushing down. When the giant came near, Diana threw the magic net over his head. Even a strong
giant could not free himself from this net. Prince Conor was free at last.

     More than seven hundred years ago, the Prince of Wales had a very big and brave dog called Gelert.
     One day the Prince went hunting with his men. He made his dog look after his baby son. The baby
was in a wooden cradle, which was like a small bed.
     When the Prince came back from hunting, Gelert ran out to meet his master. The Prince saw the blood on Gelert's jaws and head.
      He rushed into his house and looked for his baby son. The cradle was lying on its side on the floor.
The clothes were torn and there was blood on them.
     "So you have killed my son?" the Prince said angrily. He took out his sword and killed the dog.
      The Prince ran out of the house and saw his son lying on the ground unhurt. Near him was a dead

          A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The
house was very old and ran down and the owner hardly ever came out. The boy's parents told him to
stay away from the house, a lot of other neighborhoods children were told the same from their parents.
