　　E-book is short for electronic(电子的)book．It is usually read on personal com puters．Some mobile phones can also be used to read e-books．

　　Earlier e-books were written for a specific group of readers and were about only a few subjects．With the development of the internet, knowledge and answers to a lot of questions mainly come from e-books．This is why the e-book business is increasing quickly E-books have many advantages．First, they save time．We don’t need to go to a bookstore to buy books, besides, we can find the topic we want to know about on the Internet, and then we can quickly get many e-books on similar topics．Second, e-books save money．Some e-books cost a little money, and there are millions of e-books on the Internet that we can get for free．Third, more trees are saved because e-books don’t need to be printed(印刷)on paper．Fourth, e-books make reading more convenient．You can carry a whole library of hundreds of books with you in a small computer or any e-book reader(电子阅读器)without worrying about their weight．

　　But e-books have certain disadvantages．They need a personal computer or an e-book reader and the information can be lost if its file format(文件格式)is not supported or changed in the reader’s computer．

　　However, e-books provide us with a new way of reading．That is good．

　　In choosing Steven Chu as his energy secretary(能源部长), Barack Obama has chosen one of the most prominent U．S．scientists of using science to deal with global warming(全球变暖)．

　　Steven Chu was born in St．Louis, Missouri, in 1948．His father was a college teacher．At that time, they were only the third Chinese family to live there．In high school, Chu played tennis and was on the school club．He took his first physics class in his senior year at Garden City High school and became interested in it．

　　Steven Chu got his first doctor’s degree in maths and physics in 1970．Then he went to California for another doctor’s degree．In 1978, Chu worked in Bell Lab where he developed ways to cool and trap atoms using a laser(用激光冷却和俘获原子)．In 1997, he got the Nobel Prize for physics for this．He left Stanford in 2004, after he was made head of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in California．As the head of the national lab, Chu has tried to find scientific ways to climate c hange and soon become a member of the Climate Council working for a new global climate treaty(气候条约)for 2009．

　　He also insists on the need to end the unnecessary waste of energy．“If I were King of the world, I would spend the next ten years on energy efficiency and conservation(节能和环保)．”he said last year．

　　On December 11^th, 2008, Barack Obama made him energy secretary．He would be the first Chinese-American to run the department of Energy and devote himself to sustainable(可持续发展的)energy．

　　Manual came home crying．The children had called him “Fatso” again．He sat down, and looked very sad．“Don’t worry, I’m fat too,” said his mother．“ But it’s me they call Fatso,” manual cried．His mother felt very sorry for him．“ All right then,” she said．“ We are both too fat．Let’s go on a diet together．”

　　It would not be easy．They both loved bread, cakes, potatoes and chips．To diet, they had to eat salads．The first day was fun, but by nighttime, they felt very hungry．“ We won’t think about food．Let’s think about airplanes,” said his mother．“ But keep seeing chocolate in my mind,” Manual answered．The second day was hard, for they both kept thinking about cream cakes．The third was worse．By now they both wanted to give up．“No, no, we must be strong,” said Manual’s mother．

　　Somehow, they kept on dieting for three weeks, and lost a lot of fat．They liked their new bodies so much they kept going until they were really slim．After a few months, Manual enjoyed eating fruit, or nuts instead of sweets．Nobody called him Fatso anymore．Some were calling him Spider Legs－and he loved it．
