“Life is speeding up.Everyone is becoming unwell.” This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unwell person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives.

But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this:You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer.Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the telephone is getting louder and louder.Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier?Perhaps that is because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons, Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phone.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less.Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer.Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a trendy, been-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.

Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible(有责任的) enough to decide on your career(职业).
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field(领域) you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programs. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself.
With all the best wishes! Your loving father

Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and different creatures that live in this part of the sea. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore (海岸) and we spent three days on a boat.

The team used a piece of underwater equipment(装备) called ROV to collect information. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times. However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite scared---mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid any more. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around and I could see all the ways to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 meters down.

I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. It was a great chance and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will help me work harder to become a scientist.

A. To describe the experience he had in a science project.

B. To explain how to protect the wildlife under water.

C. To give advice on understanding difficult areas of science.

D. To encourage others to organize their own science projects.

2 What does the writer say about ROV?

A. It was very boring.                     B. It was used to collect information.

A. Bored.           B. Frightened.        C. Amazed.       D. Sad.

A. It has changed his opinion of science.

B. It has improved the way he works in a team.

C. It has made him more interested in the sea.

D. It has encouraged him to work harder towards his goals.

The Flower Gardens are beautiful but scientists are worried that pollution is becoming more and more serious.

5 What might the writer write in his diary about the trip?

It was interesting to work with Dr Phillips and his team but I wish someone else my age had been on the trip.

A.                                       B.

Going to the Flower Gardens was great fun. I now know much more about science but I realize there’s still a lot more to learn.
