    “Fish stories” are stories of the greatest fish that a fisherman has almost caught, but for some reason, the fish always get away. Usually, these stories do not have much truth to them. One of the biggest fish stories in history was about a whale.
    In 1891, a ship hunting for whales in the South Atlantic Ocean found a very large whale. While the hunters were trying to kill the whale, it sank two small boats. One man drowned, and another man, James Bartley, was lost in the ocean. However, after the hunters finally killed the whale, they cut open the whale’s stomach and found Mr Bartley inside. He was not dead!
    Several weeks later, Mr Bartley seemed to have gotten over his terrible experience. The only thing he could remember was that while he was inside the whale, it was very hot. The liquid (液体) from the whale’s stomach had turned all of his skin snow white. Mr Bartley had to live with the effect from the whale for the rest of his life.
    Today, many people have heard about the strange experience of Mr Bartley and do not buy it. Not one real fact has been found to prove that the events ever took place described by the sailors. No scientist or newspaper reporter was ever able to talk to Mr Bartley, and all of the stories told in magazines about Mr Bartley’s experience were explained by other sailors on the boat. Mr Bartley was probably not even a real person at all.
    In 1928, after the captain (船长) of the whaling ship had died, one man asked the captain’s wife about Mr Bartley’s story. The wife said that no man who had sailed on her husband’s ship was ever swallowed by a whale.
    However, this has not stopped James Bartley’s story from being repeated, and many people today still believe that it is true.

    　　I never go to the library to do research．It takes too much time．Since I live in New York City and both my parents work, getting to the library isn’t always easy．For a big task or research, I used to stay at the library to read, or sign out whatever books or magazines I needed．Now being able to find the information in my own living room makes everything a lot simpler．Online dictionaries and encyclopedias(百科全书)also save time．

    　　Sometimes, I think the computer spoils(娇惯)my generation because it is so easy－at least physically．But computers are not like television, which does the thinking for you．You still have to use your mind．I prefer using a computer, easy, fun and fast．

    　　It can be dangerous to travel by sea．Ships sometimes sink far away from land．When this happens, the sailors(水手)have to get into small boats．If another ship does not come and help them and they do not have enough food or water, they may die．

    　　Most people believe we must not drink sea water．They believe that if we do, we shall be very ill because of all the salt in the water．A doctor called Alain Bombard did not believe this．He thought that people could stay alive by drinking sea water and eating small fish, animals, and plants from the sea．On 19 October 1953, he set out in a small boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean．He did not take any food or water with him．

    　　Every day Dr．Bombard drank just a little sea water．He also caught fish and they had water in them．He took small plants from the sea, which gave him more food．

    　　Dr．Bombard became hot, tired and quite ill, but after 65 days at sea he was still alive．He traveled 2750 miles from one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other, and on 24 December 1953, he reached Barbados．

    　　He lost 20 kilos, but he showed that people could live on sea water and animals and plants in the sea．
