When I was twelve years old, my family were the first black people to move into an all-white part of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Many of our new  1 weren’t very welcoming. The letter was a great disappointment to me. It was from Holy Cross, the only school I really wanted to 1 . I scanned the page, “…. We had a great applicant pool this year. …We can’t offer spaces to  2 … and place you on our waiting list.”
