Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage ? A .Moods can have an effect on people’s appearances. B .Aerobic exercise can help people make better use of oxygen. C .Many tranquilizers have been provided. D .Swimming, walking, or running is an effective cure for a bad mood. D Will It Matter if I Skip Breakfast? If you have to miss one meal a day(or if you want to do so), which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you don’t eat it? If they have to make a decision of this type, most people(especially dieters or very busy people)will choose to skip breakfast. However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast(the meal which “breaks your “fast which started the night before)to be most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients we need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully with good humor. Nevertheless, many people skip breakfast or substitute a donut and a cup of coffee for a well-balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of breakfast? One recent study carried out in the United Sates tested a large number of people. Participants(people who take part in something)included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. During the experiment , these people were given a variety of breakfast , and sometimes, they had to skip breakfast completely .Special tests , including blood tests and endurancetests, were set up to analyze how well the participants’ bodies functioned when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results showed that if he or she eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work involves mental activity. The study showed that if school children eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast diet is improper. The study also showed that, contrary to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals. 查看更多

Moods, say the experts, are feelings that are likely to become fixed, having effects on one’s outlook (way of looking at things) for hours, days or even weeks. That’s great if your mood is a

pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry or simply lonely.

Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out; sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology (药理学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇定剂) and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug methods to make you free from an unwanted mood. Why do some people always seem to succeed at work, while others of equal or higher intelligence don't?It is not luck.More than likely it's the emotional intelligence factor.Emotional intelligence, often referred to as EQ, is a set of abilities that lets you form favorable relationships with yourself and others.Research shows that it can be a far better predictor of life success than IQ.At its simplest, emotional intelligence includes the following:

  Self-awareness

Recognizing your emotions and their effects, knowing your strengths and limitations, and having a strong sense of your abilities and self-worth.

  Self-regulation

Managing your moods by keeping troublesome emotions under control, and directing your feelings and resources to improving your performance and achievement.

  Self-motivation

Knowing how to use your emotions to drive yourself into action toward a desired goal and to stick to it despite difficulties.

  Empathy

Your ability to sense others' feelings and emotions, read and understand how relationships work, and expect, recognize and meet people's most important needs.

  Social skills

Your ability to bring out answers you want from others through communication, working together, influence, and relationship-building.

Unlike IQ, which you are born with, EQ can be learned, used and improved at any age.In fact, studies show that our emotional intelligence increases as we get older-getting to the highest between 50 and 59.

Psychologist Dr.Hendrie Weisinger advises writing down your emotions several times throughout the day and keeping a diary. After a week, look at what you're feeling, how you're using your feelings, and how it affects your work day. Then you can apply those skills in your own life and see what a difference it makes!
