题目列表(包括答案和解析)

A. The most common problem is a “wandering” mind

B. Selective listening is also a mental barrier

C. Listening isn’t an easy skill to master

D. Attitudes can also interfere with good listening

E. Noise and background music makes listening more difficult

F. Listening is also related to the level of the listener’s knowledge

61.

Listening is not as easy as someone thought. Even good listeners may recall only fifty percent of what they hear. Retention, the ability to remember and recall information, decreases about twenty to twenty – five percent after a few days. So no matter how well you listen in class, you’re always going to have to refresh your memory before a test! Unfortunately, many people have poor listening habits, and little listening training. To improve your listening skills, it’s important to understand what causes poor listening.

62.

If you find it difficult to concentrate solely on what a speaker is saying, there’s good reason. The mind processes information much faster than a speaker can speak. The brain can process over 500 words per minute, while the average speaker talks as a rate of 124 to 250 words per minute. That means the mind can hear what’s being said and can think about something else at the same time.

63.

If you have a negative idea about the speaker or the topic, you’ll find it difficult to listen attentively. Hostile or captive audiences often have more difficultly listening than do favorable or voluntary ones.

64.

If a speaker speaks “above the heads” of an audience, people find it difficult to concentrate. Speakers who use unfamiliar words or who use incomplete explanations make it more difficult to listen. Speakers who “speak down” to audiences, failing to acknowledge what the audience already knows, also create mental blocks.

65.

When people listen selectively, they simply block out what they don’t want to hear. For instance, many people have habits that are dangerous to their health, like smoking. However, they often choose to block out what a speaker says about health risks. They may listen to a speech and think that the speaker’s message applies to other people, not them. In other words, they hear what they want to hear and ignore what they don’t want to hear.

On a hot African morning, Leila was lying on her stomach and an elephant was walking towards her. Leila waited. Then she pushed the button on her camera. “And I got my best photo of an elephant ever, by lying under my car,” Leila explained. “I wanted to get close to the elephants, but of course this was dangerous; they had their babies with them. So every morning I used to park my car in the open near the path (小道). They used to take the same path every morning when they left the water hole. After a week, they were used to seeing my car. So the next morning, I lay under it and got my photo!”
Many of the best wildlife photos come from good planning. In Africa, photographers set up their hides (隐匿处) near water holes. They also set up hides near forest paths, as animals use the same paths every night. For bird-watching, many lakes have hides. Inside the hides, bird-watchers can watch all day in the shade (荫处) out of the wind and rain.
Good wildlife photos are needed for books, postcards, magazines and newspapers. But a success rate of 1 in 20 is good.

DNP is a dangerous chemical that’s been linked to 63 deaths, yet it is available online as a slimming pill.

It’s used in the production of pesticides(杀虫剂), chemical dyes and wood preservatives. But on many websites in Australia, it’s sold as a fat-burner and as an easy way to lose weight without dieting. The chemical is being used in diet pills that promise to speed up the body’s metabolism(新陈代谢) and remove fat. But the rapid weight loss can come at a high cost.

Most recently, DNP slimming pills were linked to death of 23-year-old British medical student Sarah Houston, who died after taking pills containing DNP that she had ordered on the internet. The night before she died, Houston told her roommates that she felt hot, her eyes yellowed and her breathing became difficult. The following day she was found dead in her room.

Her parents, Geoff and Gina Houston, say they hope their daughter’s death will be a warning to anyone who wants to buy DNP, or to see it as a quick way for weight loss. “ At the suggestion of one of the police officers, I went on Google and looked up DNP,” Gina says. “What I came up with was a list of horrible symptoms and side effects, and it’s the side effects that killed Sarah.”

A study on DNP published last year linked the chemical to 62 deaths around the world. The Food Standards Agency in the UK has given a warning about the risks of DNP, describing the drug as“extremely dangerous to human health”.

DNP works by increasing the body’s rate to burn energy and fat but this can lead to symptoms including sickness, vomiting, dizziness, rapid or heavy breathing, headaches and an irregular heartbeat. In the worst cases, DNP can lead to death.

People may believe that because they can order weight-loss products on the internet and have them sent to Britain, then those products must be safe and approved. This is clearly not true in the case of DNP.

67. Some people now buy DNP on the internet to________.

   A. kill others         B. preserve food        C. lose weight        D. build up bodies

68. According to the passage, the chemical DNP is________.

   A. a good way to lose weight without dieting

   B. really very harmful to our bodies

   C. only allowed to sell on the internet

   D. a fat-burner without side effects

69. From the passage we can infer________.

   A. DNP works well in losing weight but it has terrible side effects

   B. Sarah’s parents think Sarah’s death has nothing to do with DNP

   C. the police officers has arrested many people selling DNP

   D. it’s illegal to buy weight-loss products on the internet

70. What is the best title of the passage?

   A. DNP Has Led to Many Deaths.

   B. DNP Is a Dangerous Chemical.

   C. DNP Shouldn’t Be Bought on the Internet.

   D. DNP Has Terrible Side Effect.
