When I was younger, I belonged to a club that did community service work. There was one specific event that was 36 for me. We spent four hours handing out warm dinner to the homeless in the streets. After that we went to a(n) 37 shelter.
I was in high school at the time and my sister was too 38 to take part. She wanted to 39 , so she made sixty cookies for us to take and 40 to people. When we got to the homeless shelter we passed out the remaining 41 we had left. Next, we began making sandwiches and pairing them with other goodies(好吃的东西)and 42 them with the crowd. I had the cans with my sister’s cookies in them and began to walk around, offering them to anyone near me.
I 43 an older gentleman and said, “Sir, would you like a 44 ?”He stopped and turned around, 45 ,“What did you say? Did you call me sir?” And I told him I had, and his eyes watered a little bit and he said, “No one has ever called me sir. 46 ”
It 47 me to the core(彻底地).
I explained I had been taught that everyone deserved respect. It 48 me to think that just because he was homeless, no one afforded him the 49 which every person should get. It broke my 50 , and I couldn’t help but cry. I just didn’t understand 51 no one ever called him sir. Just because he didn’t have money or a place to live in. Every single person 52 to be treated with dignity(尊严). Years later, I 53 carry that memory and the lessons it taught me. Sometimes, what we take for granted as 54 gestures can really make a(n) 55 in someone’s life.

The tradition of birthday parties started a long time ago. There are some traditions that you can find almost anywhere, anytime, such as sending birthday cards, blowing out the candles on a birthday cake and singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song. Others are only found for certain ages and in certain countries.
In China, on a child’s second birthday, family members put many things on the floor around the child. According to Chinese tradition, the first thing that the child picks up tells you what profession the child will choose later in life.
For Japanese children, the third, fifth and seventh birthdays are especially important. At this age, there is a special celebration Shichi-Go-San (seven, five, three in Japanese) when children go to the temple wearing a new kimono (和服). The priest (僧侣) gives them special sweets, and the parents usually organize a party for their friends in their home.
In Argentina, Mexico and several other Latin American countries, girls have a special birthday celebration when they reach the age of fifteen. After a special ceremony (仪式), the girls dance a waltz with their father and other boys.
Eighteen is the traditional ‘coming of age’— the age when (in many countries) you have the right to vote, join the army and (in Britain) drink alcohol or buy a house.
In many English-speaking countries, a twenty-first birthday cake often has a key on top, or the cake itself is sometimes in the shape of a key. The key means that the young person is now old enough to leave and enter the family home at any time they want to!

If Mickey Mouse is a westerner who has captured the world,Hello Kitty is the world’s sweetheart from Asia. With its two innocent black eyes and the cute ribbon on its ear, this white-faced kitten has captivated(迷住)the hearts of women of all ages since 1974.
Hello Kitty is found on more than 50 thousand items, including toys, school supplies,make-up and even neckties.
To celebrate the character’s 38' birthday,an exhibition called“Inside Kitty" is underway at the Seongnam Arts Center in Yatab-dong.
“Kitty was not popular at all at first, even in Japan. Only since 1985,11 years after it was born, have people started to pay attention to it,”Yuko Yamaguchi, one of the designers of the
character,told the press.
“Hello Kitty was only for kids then. But in 1987,I got a letter from a high school student who said that her friends teased her because she had a Hello Kitty product. She asked the com-pany to make something that did not look strange for her to carry around. Since then we’ve tried to come up with things that all ages can enjoy,”Yamaguchi said.
Hello Kitty became popular after being displayed in Anna Sui boutiques(精品店)in the United States. Young women from all over the world have been in love with the character ever since. The boutique of MAC,a make-up brand, packed,on the day the brand was released, its first products made in collaboration with Hello Kitty.
“The character has to communicate with people. It should change over time, and always
stay fashionable,"Yamaguchi said. “Inside Kitty" starts by viewing the past of the character. Kitty fans will be delighted to see Hello Kitty items from throughout the past 38 years on display.
