　　After dinner they drove me home．Only then did I notice that Peter had left a light on when he borrowed the milk-and that someone had decorated my windows．

　　When I opened the door, I saw that the whole house had been decorated with a Christmas tree, and all other decorations．At that moment, I wished that I could still put on the breakfast, but I had made no preparations．

　　Early the next morning, a five-year-old boy with a package of sweet rolls rang my bell．Before I could ask him what was going on, he was joined by two of his friends．Within fifteen minutes, my house was alive with all the children on my street, and I had all the food I needed for the usual festive breakfast．At about nine-thirty, though, I had another surprise．Kathy Zack came to my back door．“I brought something for you, ” she said, setting a shopping bag on the counter．

　　Inside the bag were individually wrapped packages, each bearing the name of one of the children and signed, “Merry Christmas from Grandpa Melowski．”

　　The Japanese economy is at a standstill, Japan's government has said, as concerns about the strong yen(日元)continue to grow．The recovery in the economy was "pausing", the Cabinet Office said in a monthly statement．

　　It is the most negative the government has been about the economy in nearly two years．The rising yen and a slowdown in global demand for Japanese exports was blamed for the setback．

　　In recent months, the government has insisted that the economy is "picking up"．But it said it now expected the economy to remain weak for some time, with "weakening" exports being a chief concern．It said shipments to Asia in particular were becoming weaker, further hitting exporters that are already suffering from the strong yen．

　　The yen remains near a 15-year high against the US dollar, despite the financial interference(干预)in the currency markets last month for the first time in six years．

　　Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan(菅直人)has also passed a 5.1tn yen(＄63bn)stimulus package in an effort to protect exporters who have seen the poor exchange rate eat into their profits．At the close of markets in Tokyo, the yen was trading at 81.44 yen to the dollar, just off the high of 81.27 yen．

　　"If the economy turns out as expected, we may end up describing the current situation as a soft patch, " one of the government officials said, "But if it comes under further downward pressure, it could end up slipping into recession．(衰退)"
