Snowboarding(滑板滑雪) became a Winter Olympic event in 1998 but many people still don’t think it’s a “real” sport. I asked ten of my friends about this and eight of them said it shouldn’t be an Olympic event. Snowboarders must be skilful and strong, just like other athletes(运动员), and they train just as hard. So, why do people have this opinion?
Well, I think there are a few reasons. First of all, snowboarders believe that having fun is part of the sport. Maybe people think they’re enjoying themselves too much. I guess they feel that “real” sports should look like hard work. Secondly, snowboarders believe it’s of importance to show their personal style. They like to be dressed in modern clothes and often have interesting haircuts. In some people’s eyes, a well-trained athlete just doesn’t wear a funny hat or a nose-ring. Thirdly, it’s a new sport and many people haven’t tried it yet. This might make them think it’s easy, when, in fact, it’s not. Snowboarding is just as difficult, if not more difficult, than skiing.
Whatever the reasons, I think it’s time we accept that having fun doesn’t mean you’re lazy and that someone with blue hair can be a champion(冠军).

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And 36 otherwise assignen(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 37 to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 38 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 39 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the 40 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. But for the teacher who kept insisting on my “ 41 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up t he courage to go to the tryouts was only the 42 of it! When I first started 43
the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 44 what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get 45 and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid. 46 , I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to 47 on learning the game, do my best at each prctice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t 48 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the 49 and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and moticating. Very soon the competitive 50 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the 51 — friends who respect my efforts to work hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my 52 self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “53” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, 54
raising my hand — even when I sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent 55 I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

“Some day, there will be no Americans left in the NBA.” Said 12-year-old Xing Tao, who joined his school’s team two years ago, after watching Yao in a televised NBA game. “The players will all be Chinese, like Yao!”
To China Yao is a home-grown superstar who helped make the world’s first basketball league closer to Chinese players. To the NBA, the 2.23-metre centre offers an opening of a different sort into the world’s largest new market.
Yao’s NBA first appearance against the Indiana Pacers in October reached 287 million households in China. By contrast (对照), there are only about 105 million households in the US. That game might have been a bit of a let down to Yao’s fans. He played just 11 of the 48 minutes, had two rebounds and got no points.
Compare that with his performance on December 19, and also against Indiana, Yao won 29 points and 10 rebounds. “This was one of the most exciting games I’ve had,” Yao said after Houston’s 95-83 victory.
“Yao Ming has brought the NBA closer to the Chinese,” said NBA spokeswoman Cheong Sau Ching, who is based in Hong Kong. “That makes the dream seem achievable for other people in China.”
The 22-year-old Yao is not the country’s first player in the NBA; Wang Zhizhi broke down that wall as a player with the Dallas Mavericks(小牛队)in April 2001. But Yao’s combination of modesty and his skills make him a favourite back home.
60.What’s the direct reason for Xing Tao to join the school’s basketball team?
A.He watched an NBA game
B.He liked basketball
C.He hoped to play for Houston Rockets
D.He had a dream that he would become a basketball star.
61.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.Middle school students want to play basketball
B.Yao Ming makes NBA closer to China
C.There’ll be no Americans left in the NBA
D.There are many new stars from China in the NBA
62.What does “letdown” in paragraph six mean?
A.failure B.surprise C.disappointment D.sadness
63.Why does Yao Ming win more popularity than Wang Zhizhi at home?
A.He has performed excellently B.He is modest

My basketball coach at
Princeton used to say, "On the court, you can tell who is selfish(
自私的)."
When my sister Michelle
brought Barack Obama home to meet the family, she said to me, "I want you
to take him out to play, to see what type of man he is when he’s not around
me." So I invited Barack to play basketball with a few friends of mine.
I was very nervous
although I had already met Barack a few times. I was thinking this guy seemed
like a good guy. We played a hard five-on-five. He was thin but not weak. He
played extremely left-handed. He dealt with everything perfectly. He wasn’t the
best guy out there or the worst guy. I liked the fact that he was confident but
wasn’t proud. Barack was very team-oriented (有团队精神的),
very unselfish. He played as if he was one of us —he wasn’t trying to be
president of Harvard Law Review. But the best part about it was that when we
were on the same team, he did not pass me the ball each time. He wasn’t trying
to suck up to my sister through me. I was glad to give my sister the
good news, "Your boy is straight."
He isn’t selfish, which
is the greatest praise you can give both a player and a leader. America has got
a guy who is running a government in an efficient (有效率的)
manner. That’s the same guy I got to know playing basketball when he was
visiting my family.

Barack to play basketball?
A. To see whether he was
confident.
B. To see whether he was
good at sports.
C. To see whether he was
selfish or not.
D. To see whether he
could get along with others.
3.During the basketball game, Barack ______.
A. played best all the
time B. was strong enough to play
C. was not confident
D. wanted to
be the team leader

about C.
help D. look for
