What is most likely to affect your success at school or at a job? The ability to read. And that goes for your kids too. The declining literacy(读写能力的下降) of our society has been a main concern of educators for a while now, and yet things are not getting better.
In most cases, how well we learn to read will depend largely on our exposure(接触) to language as children. If we hear people around us talking about all kinds of subjects as children, we naturally pick up the words and phrases they use. If we pick up a lot of words, we will learn to read better.
Much of the traditional advice to struggling readers, theses days, seems to include developing “cognitive strategies”(认知策略). In this way, readers are asked to centre more, to think, to be interested and ask questions, to analyze, to predict, to reason, and to check their understanding, or worse still to answer questions of what they have read. In other words they are asked to become self-conscious(有自我意识的) readers. I do not agree with this approach.
Here are my several strategies for reading improvement.
Read about things that interest you. If you are interested in what you are reading about, the words will come alive, and you will understand better. The more you read, the better you will become at reading. Just get started and it will become a habit, as long as you are interested in what you are reading.
Read material that is at your level or just a little difficult for you. Read material that you find easy to read, or just a little challenging. Looking up many unknown words in a dictionary is dull, and the results of the dictionary search are quickly forgotten.
_____ If you can hear the new words and phrases that you are reading, you will have an easier time understanding and remembering them. Hearing the rhythm of someone reading a text will help your own reading.
Don’t worry about what you don’t understand. Most of your reading should be for pleasure. You can still enjoy reading without understanding all of what you read. You may even understand some things in your own personal way.
Unfortunately not all reading is just for pleasure. When you are reading a textbook or report or other material for school, you may need to underline, take notes and read some parts over again. However, if you have developed the habit of reading for pleasure, you will find that the skills you need will come naturally, and that you will understand a lot better than before.

Dear son,
The day that you see me old and I am already not in good health, have patience and try to understand me.
If I get dirty when eating, if I can not dress, have patience and remember the hours I spent 31 it to you. If, when I speak to you, I 32 the same things thousand and one times, do not 33 me, listen to me. When you were small, I had to read to you thousand and one times the same story 34 you got to sleep. When I do not want to have a 35 , neither shame me nor scold me. Remember when I had to chase you with thousand excuses I 36 , in order that you wanted to bathe. When you see my 37 little about new technologies, give me the necessary time and do not look at me with your mocking( 嘲弄 ) smile. I taught you 38 to do so many things: to eat good, to dress well, to confront life…. When at some moment I lose the memory or the 39 of our conversation, let me have the necessary time to remember, and if I cannot do it, do not become nervous, as the most important thing is not our conversation but surely to be with you and to have you 40 to me.
If ever I do not want to eat, do not force me. I know well 41 I need to and when not. When my 42 legs do not allow me to walk, give me your 43 , the same way I did when you gave your first 44 . And when someday I say to you that I do not want to 45 any more ---- that I want to rest forever, do not get 46 . Someday you will understand.
Try to understand that my age is not lived but survived. Some day you will discover that, despite my mistakes, I always wanted the 47 thing for you and that I tried to prepare the way for you. You must not feel sad, angry or impotent( 无可奈何 ) for seeing me 48 you. You must be next to me, try to understand me and to help me as I did it when you 49 living. Help me to walk, help me to end my way with love and 50 . I will pay you by a smile and by the immense love I have had always for you.
I love you, Son.

I was asked in an email about learning idioms in a foreign language.Maybe I am different from most people, but I do not bother with them.To me they are kind of dessert of language learning. They come at the end of a meal.Once you have filled up with the solid fare—the key words and phrases that are used in a variety of situations, then you can add a few idioms to spice up things. And by that time you will be able to pick them up naturally anyway.
I find that many learners have an obsession(困扰) with slang and idioms,as if repeating some very colloquial expressions is going to upgrade how they sound in a language. In fact it is the opposite.Idioms are difficult to use correctly. They can easily sound very strange coming from someone who obviously does not have a good sense of the language.
Yes,occasionally you hear idioms or slang and do not understand. But,in my experience, there are always situations where you do not understand. It is best to focus on the most important words, what they mean and how they are used.Certainly,it is best for a non?native speaker to stick to standard speech.
Some teachers even try to teach the “real language”.Then you hear non?native speakers saying things like “I gonna” ,“You wanna” etc.I just cringe(厌烦).
You will learn all the idioms you need just by exposing yourself to the language. In general, you can save any phrase that you find interesting, and if that includes idioms,go to it.But I would not make any special effort to go after idioms.I,in fact, avoid them.If I come across something in Russian that strikes me as a particularly slangy or idiomatic use of words,I just leave it aside; do not even bother trying to learn it.If it keeps on appearing, then I will learn it.But I would certainly be reluctant(勉强的) to try to use it.

Now I know that we black people are much more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes(糖尿病) than white people. And they often lead to heart attacks and other untreated diseases. For example, black people are three to four times more likely than white people to have high blood pressure and twice as likely as the white population to die of a stroke(中风).
New research has found out the surprisingly high levels of salt in many of black people’s favorite meals. I stopped putting extra salt in my food at the table long ago and I try to cut down on the salt I use in cooking. The recommended daily level of salt for adults is 6 grams. It is easy to see that if you avoid processed(加工过的) foods and use salt in your cooking within the limit, you won’t exceed the daily level.
The research showed how much salt there is in some foods that we buy from restaurants and takeaways. An average salad with rice and peas has 6.2 grams of salt. This is more salt than you are supposed to eat for the whole day.
A researcher talked about the importance of home cooking rather than take-outs. At home, he pointed out, not only can you hold control of the salt shaker, but also you can create tasty food which is low on salt. The researcher later provided curry goat and rice and peas. They were low on salt, but completely delicious.
I do not suppose Jamaicans are going to stop buying takeaways soon. But if you suffer from high blood pressure, it is probably better not to buy them often.
