When Dr Jane Goodall was a kid growing up in England, she dreamed of one day living among wild animals. That opportunity came when Goodall was 26 years old. Goodall moved to the African country and spent 25 years there. What she learned about chimpanzees（黑猩猩）fascinated people all over the world.

     After studying animals for the first part of her career, Jane Goodall began working to protect not only chimpanzees, but all creatures. Her new book,“Hope for Animals and their World,” is a collection of conservation(保护)success stories. Time For Kids talked to Goodall about her new book and her advice for young people.

   TFK: What inspired you to write a book about conservation success stories?

   Dr Goodall: Because of all my travels , I meet these extraordinary people and hear about these amazing project, and they really do give hope. They show that we can turn thing around.

   TFK: Why are these stories important?

   Goodall: There are a lot of young people who are going out and wanting to save species, and they are so often told,“Give up. It’s hopeless.” And if we have that attitude, then soon there will be noting left.

   TFK: How should kids who want to help get started?

   Goodall: Join Roots and Shoots. It gives them an opportunity to interact with other young people. The website at www.rootsandshoots.org is a way for them to learn more.

  　 Earth Day is day that is meat to inspire awareness for the Earth’s natural environment. It is the day to highlight the fact that we all have a responsibility to the environment and need to change our behavior to improve the quality of our air, earth and water.

    Global awareness of the need to protect the environment has grown greatly since 20 million people in the United States marked the first Earth Day on April 22,1970.That was started at the time of the destruction caused by an oil spill（漏油）along the coast of southern California, which killed marine life and about 10000 birds. The incident was a wake-up call for the need to protect the Earth. But similar disasters have continued to happen.

    Some of us don’t think that reusing grocery bags and recycling water bottles can help improve the quality of our air, land and water. But this is an easy place to start to make a difference when we celebrate Earth Day.

Gary Locke, 61, who comes from a Chinese background and even looks Chinese, become the new US ambassador (大使) to China.

“I can think of nobody who is more qualified than Gary Locke.” President Obama said. Locke’s new position is clearly a sign that US President is trying to improve relations with China.

When he made his first speech to the Chinese press in Beijing, Locke said, “ I think, being a Chinese-American, I have a greater understanding of the US government.”

Before becoming ambassador to China, Locke was US secretary of commerce (商务部长). This means he has plenty of trade experience, which will be useful in building economic links between the two countries.

Locke’s grandfather went to the United States over a century ago to work as a houseboy for a family in Washington State in exchange for English lessons. His father moved to US as a teenager.

“I’m going back to the birthplace of my grandfather, my father and my mom, and I’ll be doing so as a devoted diplomat (外交官) for America, the country where I was born and raised,” Locke said.
