Miss White was the owner of a little bakery. She was forty years old,and she was not married.

A customer who came to Miss White's bakery two or three times a week had never asked for any good bread, but, strangely enough,he wanted only two pieces of old and dry bread each time.

One day Miss White found on the customer's finger red and brown dirt.

She guessed that the customer probably was a poor artist. He lived in an old house, where he painted pictures and ate dry bread.Miss White,a woman with a kind heart, noticed that the customer began to look thinner and very sad,so she wanted to do something for him.

As usual the customer came again and ordered two pieces of dry bread.Suddenly a fire car came by with a great sound. When the customer hurried to the door to look,Miss White quickly cut the bread with a knife and put a lot of butter into it.She covered the bread with paper before the customer turned back to the counter(柜台).Not long after, the customer returned and shouted angry words with Miss White.“I'll kill you.You have made my picture waste.I have been working hard for three months drawing a picture for a new city hall.I always make my drawing in pencil first, and when it's done,I cleaned the pencil lines with dry and hard bread pieces.”

Hearing that,Miss White knew how foolish her kind heart was.

Recently, I heard a touching story which illustrates the 1 that words have to change a life-a power that lies right in the hands of those reading this article.

Mary had grown up knowing that she was different from the other kids, and she hated it.She was born with a cleft palate(先天性颚裂)and had to bear the jokes and 2 of cruel children who teased her non-stop about her 3 lip and unclear speech. She was 4 that no one, outside her family, could ever love her 5 she entered Mrs.Leonard’s class.

In the 1950’s, it was common for teachers to give their children a(n) 6 hearing test. However, in Mary’s 7 , in addition to her cleft palate, she was 8 able to hear out of one ear. 9 not to let the other children have another “ 10 ” to point out, she would 11 on the test each year. The “whisper test” was given by having a child walk to the classroom door, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and then 12 something which the teacher whispered.Mary turned her bad ear towards her teacher and 13 to cover her good ear.She knew that teachers would often say things like, “The sky is blue.” or “What color are your shoes?” But not on that day.Surely, God put seven words in Mrs.Leonard’s mouth that 14 Mary’s life forever. When the “Whisper test” came, Mary heard the words:“ I wish you were my little girl.”

Words from a godly teacher can 15 a heart and powerfully set the course of a life.

This Saturday morning I was having a walk around, enjoying the quiet morning, beautiful weather and lovely life, with my dog Jett running 16 (enjoy) beside me.

At one home I passed, I noticed a newspaper that 17 (lie) by the roadside instead of near the door. Thinking I would make someone else’s life a little 18 (easy), I picked up the paper and gently threw it towards their door. 19 instead of landing on the doorstep, the paper sailed 20 the wrong direction because of the strong wind and landed on the roof of a big truck in the driveway.

No one saw the funny scene but me and I burst out laughing. It was very quiet and they were probably still sleeping. It was too early to knock on the door and tell the homeowner 21 their newspaper was. 22 , instead I walked home, got dressed and went to the store to make it right.

I returned a little later with a new newspaper and a basket of strawberries freshly 23 (pick) from my garden. I found the homeowner in the driveway with some of his friends. With a deep breath I came up to him and said, “I hope you have a great sense of humour.” I explained what had happened to 24 newspaper.

Hearing this they all laughed loudly and I couldn’t help but smile all day. I’ve heard it said. “Character is what you do 25 nobody is looking.” I should be a man of character!

These days I believe most of us have been informed of a newly born disease dubbed swine flu. Even the farmers in remote areas heard of this 1 a host of times, though they may even have no clues at all about 2 this disease really is.

3 hearing the breakout of the flu in Mexico, needless to say, I myself did feel a strong sense of fright. Maybe many people, 4 somewhat worried, might not feel so concerned to the degree I felt. Maybe some of us still felt that the disease was too 5 away from us at that time, for it just hit Mexico and not too many deaths were caused then. If you really thought so, I could do nothing but 6 to laugh at you for your extremely childish and immature thinking. This disease led me to think of ASRS taking place years ago. 7 was beyond our wildest dream how many doctors and nurses departed 8 their families forever for the sake of saving lives. All these are so brutal that we are reluctant to mention them any more.
