A Giant Leap for China

A few days ago, he was just Colonel(上校)Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face. But last Thursday, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei’s smile was seen across the world above the magic words:“China’s first spaceman”.

The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9 a. m.Last Wednesday by China’s Shenzhou Ⅴ spacecraft, which orbited the earth 14 times. He landed safely at 6∶23 a. m.The next day, making China the third country successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US.

Yang was satisfied with his job.“I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful, ”He said on a special plane to Beijing after landing.Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987, spending 1350 hours in the air.He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later.

While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China’s national flag and the United Nations’ flag to the people watching on TV at home.He also ate a meal of diced chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap.The whole project went according to plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems.

Anyone who saw the destruction of the US space shuttle Columbia in February this year will know that Yang took a great risk.

He experienced extremely high temperatures, while the gravitation(重力)on take-off and landing were strong enough to force tears from his eyes.

He has spent five years training to become a spaceman.

“I eat all of my meals at the space programme’s dinning room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten, ”he said.“I’ve never met his teachers.”

But becoming China’s first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile.

“When I boarded the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn’t help feeling excited,” he said.“I decided that I had to fly it.”

To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. One visitor to a Xinhua news agency online forum(网上论坛)said, “Yang’s trip is a giant leap forward for China.”

Officials say the next Shenzhou will be launched by 2005.China also plans to develop spacewalking and a space lab.

Man was been travelling into space for more than 40 years.Even today though, very few people get the chance to be an astronaut, about 30 per year. This is mainly because of the expense(费用,开支).It costs millions of yuan to train and send astronauts into space.Very few countries can afford this.

This is why American businessman Dennis Tito paid 20 000 000 US dollars to the Russian space agency(部门,机构)to go into space. He visited the International Space Station. His trip, making him the first ever space tourist, took eight days in total. He spent most of his time taking photos, looking at Earth and listening to music on his once-in-a-lifetime(一生只有一次的)trip.

After landing safely back on earth, Mr Tito thought the trip was worth the money. The only difficulty he had was walking but this is normal for anyone who’s been in zerogravity(重力).

Some people, especially in the American space agency, argue that you must be professional(专业的)to go into space. They worry about the safety of other astronauts. However, Mr Tito received training before he left.He also helped to prepare food for the others while in space. They told him what to do and where he was allowed to go.

A survey carried out soon after Tito landed showed that 75% of Americans supported(支持)space tourism. Some people are bored of all the places on earth. They are looking for a new adventure and space is the place.

The money Mr Tito gave the Russians paid for 20% of their annual budget(预算).If we want to see men on Mars(火星)and other planets, we may need rich people like Mr Tito to help us pay for it.The Russians have more rich people who want to become space tourists. They should take them.

(1)

How many people have flown in space?

[ ]

A.

About 30

B.

More than 1200.

C.

Thousands

D.

About 12 000.

(2)

Why did the Russians want Dennis Tito to go into space?

[ ]

A.

They wanted to work with an American.

B.

They wanted him to have a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

C.

They wanted him to take photos of Earth.

D.

They wanted his money.

(3)

What were the differences between Mr Tito and the other astronauts?

[ ]

A.

None.

B.

Only Tito was allowed to cook.

C.

Tito couldn’t go everywhere on the space station.

D.

Tito received training before he flew in space.

(4)

What does the writer think about Dennis Tito?

[ ]

A.

He helped Russia keep going into space.

B.

He was not a good astronaut.

C.

He couldn’t help the Russians much.

D.

He shouldn’t be allowed into space again.
