Adopting a vegan diet dramatically(显著地)reduces one person's impact on the environment.
It would help deal with the problem of climate change if people ate less meat, according to a
government agency.
A leaked email to a vegetarian campaign group from an Environment Agency official expresses
sympathy with the environmental benefit of a vegan diet, which bans dairy products and fish.
The agency also says the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs(DEFRA)is
considering recommending eating less meat as one of the key environmental behavior changes needed
to save the planet.
It says that this change would have to be introduced"gently"because of"the risk of alienating(使疏远)
the public".
David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, has raised the issue that farm animals are blamed for
producing large amounts of powerful greenhouse gas, methane, and told farmers they need to do
something about it but the agency's response appears to go further than official advice.
It has provoked(引起)an immediate response from the National Farmers Union, which said the
suggestion was"simplistic"and"a cause of concern".
The agency's official was responding to an email from the vegan group Viva, which argues that it
is more efficient to use land to grow crops for direct consumption by humans rather than feeding them
to dairy cows or livestock(家畜)raised for meat.
The campaign group entered a comment on the Environment Ageney's website saying:"Adopting
a vegan diet reduces one person's impact on the environment even more effective than giving up their
car or forgoing several plane trips a year! Why aren't you promoting this message as part of your
World Environment Day campaign?"
An agency official replied:"While potential benefit of a vegan diet in terms of climate impact could
be very significant, encouraging the public to take a lifestyle decision as substantial as becoming a vegan
would be a request that few are likely to take up."
You will be interested to hear that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is
working on a set of key environmental behavior changes to mitigate climate change.Consumption of
animal protein has been highlighted within that work.As a result the issue may start to figure in climate
change communications in the future. It will be a case of introducing gently as there is a risk of alienating
the public.
"Future Environment Agency communications are unlikely to ever suggest adopting a fully vegan
lifestyle, but certainly encouraging people to examine their consumption of animal protein could be a
key message."
Juliet Gellatley, director of Viva, said, "I think it is extraordinary that a government agency thinks
becoming a vegetarian or a vegan could have such a positive impact on the environment yet it is not
prepared to stand up and argue the case."
A DEFRA spokesman said:"The government is not telling people to give up meat.It isn't the role
of government to enforce a dietary or lifestyle change on any individual."

Can you imagine what our life will be like in the year 2050? Perhaps you will be flying off for a holiday on the moon, or maybe you will be taking your dog for a walk in virtual(虚拟的)reality. We recently carried out a survey(调查)of 1000 people from different countries find out what they think life will be like in the future. The results clearly show both our hopes and fears.

The survey suggests that friendship—one of the most important human relationships—will have changed dramatically(显著地). People will make friends mainly through the Internet. What is more, a large number of people will come across their future spouses(配偶)in this way! Computers will have become Completely necessary by 2050. Even now, some people begin to regard them as their best friends! Others, however, say that we will become much more separated and estranged(疏远的)from each other because we will have little real human contact.

Education will have changed a lot, too. As more and more children will be using computers in schools, certain abilities, such as mental arithmetic(心算)won’t be necessary since there will be computer programs for most calculations(计算). Even writing by hand—at least to some extent—will have become a thing of the past.

According to the survey, home life will be more and more comfortable. Most people believe that by 2050 robots will be doing housework and we will rely mainly on ready-made food. A lot of people think that we might only cook for fun in the future.

Space exploration(探险)will become increasingly popular. Fifty percent of the people we talked to believe that man will regularly visit Mars. They also believe that travel on our own planet will probably change. Almost everyone thinks that there will be no cars in the city center. Some even think that environmentally—friendly(利于环保的)electric of solar-powered cars will have replaced the cars we use now.

Pollution is something that worries us very much. Some fear that it will continue to get worse, and that it well be impossible for us to live on our polluted planet. Others even foresee(预言)that one day we’ll have to pay for clean air.

On the other hand, people seem to be quite optimistic about the benefits of genetic(遗传)engineering, as they think scientists will use it to cure diseases like cancers and AIDS. If scientists manage to find a cure for these, we’ll have a much healthier society.

Some people worry about the future, while others are full of hope and confidence(信心). No matter how dark or bright it may seem, it is up to us to look after our planet and try to make it a better globe to live on.

(1) Many people believe that in 2050, we will ________.

[ ]

A.not pay for computers

B.seldom leave our homes

C.not have any real friends

D.find partners and friends mainly through computers

(2) The passage suggests that in 2050 ________.

Sleepless in Seattle? Hardly. West Virginia is where people are really staying awake, according to the first government study to monitor state-by-state differences in sleeplessness. West Virginians’ lack of sleep was about double the national rate, perhaps a side effect of health problems such as obesity(肥胖), experts said.

Nearly 1 in 5 West Virginians said they did not get a single good night’s sleep in the previous month. The national average was about 1 in 10, according to a federal health survey. Tennessee, Kentucky and Oklahoma also were notably above average with nearly 1 in 7 people reporting in a lack of sleep. In contrast, North Dakota was below average, with only 1 in 13 reporting that degree of sleeplessness. Health officials do not know the exact reasons for the differences.

In the survey, people weren’t required to answer the question why they were not able to get enough rest or sleep. But experts noted several possible explanations: West Virginia ranks at or near the bottom of the nation in several important measurements of health, including obesity, smoking, heart disease and the proportion of adults with disabilities.

Studies have increasingly found that sleeping problems often occurred among people with certain health problems, including obesity. “You would expect to see poorer sleep within a chronically (慢性地) diseased population,” noted Dr Ronald Chervin, a sleep disorders expert in University of Michigan.

Financial stress and work shifts(倒班)can play roles in sleeplessness, too, Chervin added. He suggested those may be contributing factors in West Virginia, an economically depressed state with tens of thousands of people working in coal mining.

The report was based on results of an annual telephone survey of more than 400,000 Americans, including at least 3,900 in each state. The survey did not include people who use only cellphones.
