  The Sapporo Snow Festival (Sapporo Yuki-matsuri) is a festival being held every year in Sapporo, Japan for over seven days in February. Presently, Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome are the main places of the festival. The 2013 Yuki-matsuri dates are February 5 to 11.

    The festival is one of Japan’s largest and most typical winter events. In 2007 (58th Festival), about two million people visited Sapporo to see the hundreds of floating statues and ice sculptures at the Odori Park and Susukino sites, in central Sapporo, and at the Satoland site. The festival is thought to be a chance for promoting international relations. International Snow Sculpture Contest has been held at the Odori Park site since 1974, and 14 teams from various areas of the world participated in 2008.

   The subject of the statues differs and often shows an event, famous building or person from the previous year. For example, in 2004, there were statues of Hideki Matsui, the famous baseball player who at that time played for the New York Yankees. A number of stages made out of snow are also constructed and some events including musical performances are held. At the Satoland site, visitors can enjoy long snow and ice slides as well as a huge maze(迷宫) made of snow. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of local foods from all over Hokkaido at the Odori Park and Satoland sites, such as fresh seafood, potatoes and corn, and fresh dairy products.

    Every year the number of Statues displayed is around 400 in total. In 2007, ther were 307 statues created in the Odori Park site, 32 in the Satoland site and 100 in the Susukino site. The best place to view the creations is from the TV Tower at the Odori Park site. Most of the statues are lighted in the evening. The Sapporo Snow Festival Museum is placed in the Hitsujigaoka observation hill (羊之丘展望台)in Toyohira-ku, and displays historical materials and media of the festival.

A Brief Introduction to the Red Army Theme Park

  As the world famous Long March, the Red Army have laid the solid foundation for the founding of new China.It is the wishes of the Red Army Veterans(老兵)to build a theme park that can express our national pride and improve the environmental conditions of Beijing.

  The Red Army Theme Park will help unite the Chinese people under the CPC leade  rship for the 21st century.We intend to build the park into a first-class multi-purpose complex(综合体)with an outstanding theme and famous features that combine education, tourism, recreation and leisure.

  The selected site(地址)of the Red Army Theme Park is in Shuangqiao Farm and the Forest Park of Heizhuanghu Township, Chaoyang District of Beijing City.The site is close to Beijing-Shenyang Expressway and only a ten-minute drive away from Beijing-Tongzhou Expressway and Shuangjing Overpass of the Third Eastern Ring Road of Beijing.

  The British Museum is the biggest in the world. Notices tell you abut a hundred different things to see: clocks which have been telling the time far six hundred years, Roman money, some of the earliest books in the world, Shakespeare's own writing…

  The story of the British Museum goes back four hundreds years to one unusual man, Sir Hans Sloane, doctor to King George Ⅱ. The doctor couldn't stop collecting——books, drawings, doctor warned everything to stay together when he died, so that people could come and look at it. The Museum started to grow. It has never stopped. The first difficulty was finding a home. One idea was Buckingham Place, but the Palace wasn't big enough. Finally people found a larger building for the Museum in the middle of London.

  The British Museum opened in 1579, six years after Sir Hans Sloane died. Assistants with gun stood at the, doors. Only gentleman could visit the Museum and then they had to buy tickets Ladies could only come in pairs, and children were forbidden! And as the Museum was only open three days a week and only ten people could enter in an hour, there wasn't much time to see things. Visitors had to run through the rooms!

  By about 1800, Wonderful statues, 3000 years old, arrived from Egypt. A Scotsman, Lord Elgin, brought back some of the oldest and mast beautiful Creek sculptures in the world.

  New books as well as old ones arrived at the Museum a hundred years ago. When the new Reading Room opened, everybody said that the new Reading Room was wonderful! Since then, many famous men have written and studied there.

  A lot of the Museum's work now is also scientific. New machines can find out how old things are and how to mend them and keep then for the future. It is open every day of the year, except for three holidays. There are lots of special exhibitions and every day there are different films and talks, some of them for children. Small machines tell you about the Museum as you walk round it: you can look and listen at the same time. So if you are one of the British Museum's two million visitors this year, you have a lot to look forward to. Don't try to see it all too quickly. There is a lifetime of looking in the British Museum.
